Welcome ,I will give a full and clear answer to your question, please make sure to reply to any questions I have. They may be essential to my reply.
I take it the problem is with iPhoto importing?
Ok the iPhoto library will need to be rebuilt .
Sounds hard , its easy .
How fluent are you with using the Mac ?
Is there a good amount of free space on the Mac HD?
I believe so
How large is your iPhoto library
how do I check?
the photo show the Mac HD free space .
how to find .
iphoto: 377mb sounds small
for the iphoto lib size , do you have many photos approx ?(NNN) NNN-NNNNor 10000 or more ?
the iphoto lib is found in your pictures folder , it is a file .
the file contains all the photos .
You can find the file , and see the files size .
on my mac, says I have 41GB avail
41GB , is ok but now much space really .
says 19.87GB on 750 items
if the iphoto lib is smaller than 25GB it should still be no problem to rebuild it .
750 items doesn't sound right though, should be more.
what is the size 19gb for ?
is there a way I can go into iphoto to see the number of items?
it is not the number we want it is the file size .
in the finder .
So click finder in the dock .
Navigate to your user pictures folder .
See the finder window Pictures ,find the file iPhoto Library .
the is the file , you can select it , and hit cmd i , for get info . size info is stated .
I don't see an iphoto library folder
hi , it is ok . the total pictures size is 19GB .
ok we proceed .
thanks for the photo , your iPhoto lib in the photo is stated used at :
ok. 1st step .
check your Mac HD .
Please run a Mac HD drive repair ,and Repair Permissions of the Mac HD startup volume .Disk UtilityReview this video to become familiar with the below procedure ..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFv3h7MVX4A&feature=related
how long will it take?
Disk Utility can be found in your applications/Utilities folder /Disk Utility
to check the Mac HD , 20mins.
we must check the Mac HD to avoid errors . or making the problem worse .
you can run the check while booted as you are . but if a repair need to be made , startup from DVD is needed .
or a safe boot .
if you want to do it blind , a safe boot is one choice.
running disk utility now, don't have the start-up disk with me ...
i will run the utility as booted.
A safe boot can help fix any Mac HD errors,Turn off the Mac .Power on the Mac .Hold shift on the keyboard using a "USB keyboard or for laptops use the built in keyboard , while powering on the Mac just after the chime and starting up keep holding the Shift key , this should boot to safe mode.Once booted to safe mode , restart and boot as normal .Full details here :-http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1455
you can do one or the other Mac HD repair or safe boot .
wait, should I run disk utility or reboot in safe mode now?
if your Mac seems to stall , just wait . this is normal .
during the test of mac HD .
stall when? you are moving to fast.. slow down.
the Mac can seem to crash . so just wait .
Is Step 1 run disk utility?
chose the Mac HD in the hardware list .
then see bottom left and right .
Do I verify or repaid disk?
use repair as possible .
verify Mac HD . you can only verify for one of the repairs ,
while booted normally .
if repair is able to be clicked use repair.
you can only repair permissions .
option is not there...
please do so .
see panel both sides bottom .
there are two checks. or repairs .
left is permissions .
use repair .
ah yes, on left side repair option is there.
right is check disk etc .. use verify
clikc repair permissions?
yes repair twice the permissions .
There are 4 buttons on the bottom left and right. Which do I click first?
Second, third, and forth if necessary..
then quit all open apps , apart from disk u and me .
SLOW DOWN, you are confusing me.
Have you pressed repair for permissions .
One by one here...
once completed do it once more . i.e twice in total .
I have a full list of details if you want to read fully .
No, just answer my questions as you are moving fast and confusing me a bit...
Hi , I posted a video showing how to make the repairs .
on the left: verify disk permissions, repair disk permissions.
on the right: very disk, repair disk.
its more easy for you to sit back and watch the video .
Your video says choose 'repair disk' on the bottom right, and as I stated before, that option is not there for me.
Review this video to become familiar with the below procedure .. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFv3h7MVX4A&feature=related
Your option may state as first aid instead the rest is pretty much the same.
I just want a professional who can run me through the steps, I can search youtube myself... please put my question back in the pile for someone else to help me...
If the repair option is not there , use verify
verify will do us just fine .
if no error is reported by verify , no repair needs to be made .
ok , Im happy to explain in detail anything your not sure about .
It is worth knowing how to make this check/s on your Mac . every six months is a good idea.
it says I need to repair HD
However, I don't have the start-up DVD.
Ok , then we do need to repair the Mac HD.
Does repairing a HD cause me to lose any information stored?
We can make a safe boot .
then problem may then be fixed without the DVD .
So I make a safe boot and repair from disk utility there?
we can test .
I post .
So just boot to safe mode, then restart and reboot normally?
Is it automatic . YES>
then run the same test we just made .
to check if its gone .
you can book mark me here , to return .
yup, be back.
the webpage .
I will wait .
glad we fould a problem .
if the error comes back green , then we can then rebuild the iphoto lib.
the error no doubt affected the iphoto lib.
no more errors, came back said I was in good health. it was green the final note.
I think my computer might still be 'indexing' though...
ok good news .
ok details for iphoto rebuild.:-
please read fully , :
Option 1Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup. If that fails:Option 2Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function.http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/The above app will create a new "iPhoto Library Rebuilt" file in your Pictures along side your old iPhoto library .Its fully automatic . -We need to see at least 15GB free space on the Mac HD.Or 20% of the HDD total space for better running. . And to rebuild the library we need plenty of space on top of that , i.e at least the size of the Pictures folder for your User . we already checked this . -The library may have a problem .You may need to rebuild your iphoto library!Photos should be safe in doing so .Alt:Or apple apples method below .Hold down the CMD & Alt while opening iPhoto and select rebuild library...This should get you up and running again , or you may be presented with the following options :1) rebuild the photos' small thumbnails2) rebuild all of the photos' thumbnails (this may take a while)3) rebuild the iphoto library database4) recover orphaned photos in the iphoto library folder5) examine and repair iphoto library file permissionsPlease carry out the options for repair / rebuild of the iphoto library in the order below:3) rebuild the iphoto library database. If needed.5) examine and repair iphoto library file permissions. If needed.2) rebuild all of the photos' thumbnails .You should run a full repair on your Mac HD and repair permissions also for Mac HD .You may fix issues that are related and more wide spread , a possible cause for the problem with iphoto library . .Checks for correct running of OSX and applications on Mac OSX .The Mac HD needs around 8 GB free to work correctly , esp with caches for imovie , iphoto etc ,and or scratch disk use with other applications ..-It maybe some problems have been going on for a while with your system!Lets run though some basic repair checks . we already done this .
scroll up to read , if your having issue scrolling the chat window , please use Firefox with this website .
I don't have my external HD with me, do I lose my photos with the rebuild?
hi , no you will not lose your photos.
if you use the fatcat route , it may be safer as it does not touch the lib it simply creates a new one in the picutures folder along side the old one .
the new file " iPhoto library Rebuilt " will be made in the user Pictures folder.
apples method will attempt to repair the old iphoto lib and replace it .
the choice is yours .
So if iphoto rebuild, I do it three times... 3, 5 and then 2... right?
no , only make the rebuilds once , there are rebuild options to tick on and off . do each in turn .
But I do each one separately or at the same time?
with the fat cat route , all this is made automatically .
it does not matter , 1 or many at once .
id would tick all the boxes and let it do the whole lot at once .
ok, be back.
the option to rebuild each part is if you know what the problem affects.
and we dont fully so do them all . or use fatcat rebuild tool .
it can take a while ,I will wait .
while it rebuilds , dont open any other apps , you can keep Firefox open though .
let it complete fully , do not power off , if laptop ,make sure power lead fitted.
going well, I believe.
time keeps going up.
I think its done.
Any next steps?
if you used apples method ,ok once its done , just open iphoto and test
i can try to do an import?
the computer and iphoto should now work.
you can try , yes
last question, while its doing that...
when I sync via itunes, where do my notes get stored?
stored as in the file?
or to read on the Mac . ?
appears to have locked up again!
disregard, we are back on the move!
is it working?
If your using OSX 10.8 notes is dealt with via the notes app.
in 10.6 OSX notes should be seen in Mail.
video should explain :
for lion , notes has its own app .
anyway I can make my computer faster?
macbook, from like 2008
What is the total size of your Mac HD ?
Replace it for an SSD .
also fit more ram , how much ram installed?
Apple menu , about this mac.
2.13 Ghz, 2 MB Ram
2GB you mean ram.
find me this info.
Model Name: MacBook
Model Identifier: MacBook5,2
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.13 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 3 MB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
fit 8GB of ram
8 is the max.
only 50 bucks??
just with the ram the mac will work 75% better
and I can just take out the old one and put in the new one?
yes it is cheap , 2x4gb chips
as the ram chips are the perfect time to buy.
perfect time why?
For SSD is not the perfect time to buy as expensive .
the ram is cheaper than when your mac was new .
as time goes by the chip will be more expensive again .
can I just open up the laptop and put the ram chips in myself?
yes , please see the link , to OWC ram 8gb , and there is full support on the site with videos , and live text chat etc to do this .
your mac is : Model Identifier: MacB
ook5,2 . so thats the ram you need , and the instructions also .
take a few hours to read the OWC page for ram and youl find it easy .
How big is your Mac HD ? total size ?
The ram and the Mac HD are not the same btw , the Mac HD is the hard disk .
The ram is used by the CPU the computers brain etc to load apps .
and the OSX system .
2gb is about enough to load the system .
Plus on app .
Plus one app.
You can see using activity monitor that your out of ram .
activity monitor in the utilities folder .
open it , check on Ram . see the pie chart lower left .
if you have less than 500mb free everything slows down as virtual memory is being used more so .
with two apps open you ram will be down to this level , I dont need to look .
the Mac HD you Mac HD is low on space . 40GB remaining .
this is low , but not critical .
but will slow down the mac .
your drive will become fragmented if used with this much space free .
depends on your usage ,
if you downloads lots then delete etc , your drive become fragged .
should I de-frag?
160GB for Mac HD is small ,
you can replace with a 250GB or 500GB SSD .for max performance
fitting a SSD with increase your battery life , and speed up opening apps .
it will also make the mac boot up in around 15seonds .
you would need an external case for your old Mac HD to fit in to .
you can then install a new copy of OSX on your new SSD .
maybe I will just stick to the RAM.
why do you think the price is so cheap right now?
then migrate your user back on to the new SSD from the now external Mac
its not hard if you have everything you need at the same time , Inc the OSX install DVD .
note , : at this time snow leopard is faster than using lion . or M lion.
so stick with snow.
is 10.6 snow?
the ram is cheaper because it is now not the latest thing . simple .
10.6.8 = snow . yes.
if you have not used apple software update , I would do so .
also , a good idea , once you free up some space and check all is ok on the mac is to install a OSX combo update .
this will replace the system or best part of it .
in one hit .
seeing as your Mac HD had errors , other errors in the software may be corrected in doing so .
is it an apple product/software?
i.e fixing the Mac HD using disk tools etc , does not repair the software .
apple software update yes .
I am installing iOS 6 in my cell now, once its down I will check for latest updates, is that where I find the combo osx update?
there is also a v1.1 update if you mac is already running 10.6.8 . it may be the older version .
new version :
You can find all apple updates via , apple menu , software update . BUT .
for the combo update that is a system update , please do not use apple menu etc , instead use the link above .
and it won't crash my system, right?
to download the update , then install it by hand . run the downloaded installer etc .
no . it wont crash your Mac , if the Mac HD is working correctly and there is good free space on it
you can test you mac HD again to check before installing the combo update v1.1
and check again after it completes .
always use the power adapter during installs .
also the mac may run faster while on main power .
mains power .
thanks for all your help.
I will chat you back if I have any follow-up questions.
I have a few more tips on speeding the mac .
did the iphoto work now to import
yes, iphoto import completed successfully!
read up on :
I think the app priority and renicer do the same thing so use or try app priority
Fitting the ram is the best action .
thank you very much for the tips.
Free memory tool .
most useful to monitor when your ram is low .
as menu bar item .
Ok glad the iphoto fix worked .
Please press accept and bonus is more than welcome . :)
Buy the ram now while its cheap . OWC best place to buy .
I have 16GB in my mac , your max can only be 8 .
but 8 will show much improvement .
you will be pleased .
Please press accept button and any bonus is more than welcome .
