Hello and thank you for asking your question, with JustAnswer.com/Mac. I am Sr. Mac Tech Support Specialist, Terry, glad to assist you.
I actually have a Sony Handycam myself- so I am sure I can assist you
can you provide me first what version of Mac OS X you are using?
Ok bear with me if you would, let me check my Mac resources for your version of Mac OS X
thanks for your patience
it looks like your Sony handycam DCR-HC36 may not be compatible with your iMac and 10.6.8 Snow Leopard
here is Apple's iMovie 11' Camcorder Compatibility guide
I just check three more times
because I don't want to mislead what I am confirming
that why is it doesnot the camera
and they hardly support any DCR models
that is the ONLY reason why
I had to shop hard for my Sony Handicam just to make sure it was compatible with my Mac
and I admit I was a bit nervous because i was not sure if it would work
but it was on that list per the link I just provided you
so that proved that Apple is true to their compatibility with third party products
thank you for the info, i try everything, including deleteing perferences.
camcorders and cameras
I am sorry I was not able to connect with you sooner
how long have you had your Handicam if I may ask?
"HandyCam" - sorry
That is why I could not see any DCRs on the camcorder list for Apple
I have an idea
so I am not throwing the towel on this yet
Do you use SD cards in your handycam to store video as well as photos?
And the videos store ok on the SD card, correct?
i did not stored any video , sd card.
ah, so you can only store still shots (photos) on the SD Card?
Let me briefly explain why I am asking
If you can get a Mac-compatible smart card /SD card reader
you can set up that reader on your iMac
and would be able to upload video onto your Mac OS X system
and then can use those videos in iPhoto, iMovie, Aperture, etc
because I have tried it
you are most welcome
do you have any other questions regarding the information I have provided
please do not hesitate to bookmark this session in your web browser
so you can come back to this session if needed
if you are ok and good to go, then I want to say thank you for allowing me to assist you
