I cannot open iphoto on my mac book os 10.7.4. I get a blank page telling me to open it while pressing option and command, but I am unable to rebuild it. The message pops up again.

Appleologist :

Hi, and welcome to Just Answers! I am excited to get started with you.

Customer:

Have you received my message about not being able to open i photo?

Appleologist :

Yes I did :) Lets get started

Customer:

ok

Appleologist :

Do you have more than one iphoto library?

Customer:

no

Customer:

well I have many folders within i photo

Appleologist :

What is preventing you from re-building it?

Customer:

I have no idea. I place a check mark in the rebuild square. then the screen goes blank and the message pops up again. It says it is either being used by another application or is unreadable. It is not being used by another application as far as I know.

Appleologist :

Ok, Can you hit theses 3 combination keys at the same time

1. Command+Options+escape

2. This will show you all of your open applications

3. Force quit all except safari and Finder

Customer:

ok I will do that now

I did that. Only skype and mail were open

besides safari and finder

Appleologist :

Now hold down Command+Option and click on iphoto. choose repair permissions

Customer:

still cannot open i photo

get a beach ball and the same message

Customer:

got same message. nothing happened

Customer:

got same message and a blank page

Customer:

still won't work

Customer:

sorry, I thought I lost you.

Appleologist :

It sounds like you have a corrupt library. To make sure, we are going to create a new one to confirm my thoughts.

Appleologist :

1. Hold down the option key and press iphoto

2. Choose new library

Customer:

ok now what

Appleologist :

Name it iPhoto-New and hit ok

Appleologist :

Save

Customer:

ok i photo opened, but, of course, with none of my photos

Appleologist :

Yes. So that means you have a corrupt library. Did you create a lot of albums in your old library?

Customer:

yes

Customer:

I do have the photos saved as pictures else where on the mac

Appleologist :

Ok, We will have to create a new library, but you will have to make your albums again. Is that ok?

Customer:

if that is all we can do, I will have to do it.

Appleologist :

Cool. what operating system are you running?

Customer:

os 10.7.4

Appleologist :

1. Open your finder window (first icon in the dock)

2.Click on pictures which is located in the left column

3. Right click "iPhoto Library" (Not the new one)

4. Choose show package contents

Customer:

ok done

Appleologist :

Ok can you locate 2 folders for me

1. Original

2. Modified

Customer:

yes they are there

Appleologist :

Ok, go ahead and change the name

1. Change original to Photos 1

2. And modified to Pictures

Customer:

ok done

Appleologist :

Ok, now drag and drop those 2 folders into the iPhoto library we just created

Customer:

where is that library?

Appleologist :

Hold down the option key while clicking on iphoto. Select the new library we created

Customer:

ok - dropped folder into events and the other into photos

Looks like it will take awhile but they are uploading

Appleologist :

Yes it will, I will check back with you in about 10 mins

Customer:

Appleologist :

Appleologist :

How are we doing so far?

Customer:

It is importing the photos very quickly now. When it is done, will I always have to open ip hoto by pressing option?

Appleologist :

nope, we are going to have you confirm your photos, then we will need to delete your old library

Customer:

a little more than half finished

Appleologist :

ok

Customer:

am in France where internet has been spotty

This should be finished in 5 min or so, but if I lose you, what should I do?

Appleologist :

You can log back into your account and view your questions. There should also be a link in your email

Customer:

ok

Customer:

shouldn't be much longer

Appleologist :

Its ok, Im very patient :)

Customer:

Customer:

Appleologist :
