What really happens when you open System Preferences ?

Nothing happens when I click on System Preferences in the apple icon.

Sorry for the delay...I was helping other client here. Goto Applications and can you find the System Preferences in there ? If so, can you open it from there ?

System Prefereces is not in Applications.

That means somehow the System Preferences application is got deleted or moved from that location.

Download System Preferences app from here : http://www.mediafire.com/?uroduxoqyaaqtau

Then put the System Preferences to the Applications folder. Let me know if that didn't work, so we can continue troubleshooting. Don't Rate my answer until you are satisfied.

That app won't launch. It did download though. I tried launching it a few times.

Did you got the System Preferences from the zip file you have downloaded ? Also try restarting your Mac.

Yes. I got System preferences from zip file, but it will not launch. I'm restarting Mac.

Goto Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences folder and trash the com.apple.systempreferences.plist file.

Then goto Macintosh HD > Users > your username > Library > Preferences folder and trash com.apple.systempreferences.plist file if you can find it there too.

Then restart your Mac. Does that works ?

Nope. I have this:


com.apple.pcast_integration. plist


com.apple.peferences.sharing.plist


com.apple.RemoteManagement.plist


com.apple.security.systemidenties.plist


com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist


But no com.apple.systempreference.plist

There is supposed to be a plist file. Open Terminal application from Applications > Utilities folder. Then run the following command

cd ~/Library/Preferences/

 

sudo rm --f com.apple.systempreferences.plist


Any errors ?

No errors just says no such file or directory.


I did find com.apple.systempreferences.plist in my users folder and deleted it from there though.

The application system preferences 2 quit unexpectedly.


Mac OS X and other applications are not affected.


Click relauch to launch the application again. Click repor to see details or send a report to Apple.


I have ignored, reported and relaunched.


This was the app you had me download from mediafire. It will not launch. I have redownloaded it three times.

Trash System Preferences from Applications folder. Then please reinstall your Mac OS X again from the discs. Make sure there is no com.apple.systempreferences.plist in Preferences folder before reinstalling this time.

OK. I see system preferences now. Hurrah!


it took me a minute to get back on Internet b/c my


firefox icon is no longer on dock. There is a question mark.


Do you know how to get that back?


There is no option when you right click and dragging to dock doesn't work.

Goto Macintosh HD > Users > your username > Library > Preferences folder and trash the com.apple.dock.plist file. Restart your Mac. Now, try draggig it. Does that works ?

Yep. That worked. My printer does not work now, however.
