It sounds like the keyboard layout is set incorrectly in your System Preferences. Click the Apple menu and then System Preferences then Language & Text.

Click the Input Sources tab. Then tick 'Show input menu in menu bar' in the bottom right. Then in the list in the left tick the box beside 'Keyboard & Character Viewer', and any other input source you need.

Then click the flag in the menu bar and set it to the correct keyboard layout.

If this does not resolve the situation then I will need to know which country you purchased your MacBook in, and I need to know what input source you are using.
