CompExpert :

hi,
does it freeze right away or it freeze when booting to osx?

CompExpert :

if it freeze during boot process then your hard drive might be defective.

try to remove hard drive from your macbook, power on your system without hard drive

and see if it boot up with a little folder with question mark appear.

CompExpert :

if without the hard drive and system working fine without freezing

CompExpert :

then you need to get a new hard drive

Customer: Got it to the home screen then a bright strobing screen covers the desktop
Customer: Freezes when booting to osx
Customer: It is amacbook pro laptop
CompExpert :

what osx version did you installed on that laptop?

Customer: Lion
CompExpert :

10.5 leopard, 10.6 snow leopard or Lion 10.7

CompExpert :

power off your computer

Customer: Ok
CompExpert :

power on again right away hold down command and R keys

CompExpert :

keep holding it until you get into a mac osx utilities screen

Customer: It is frozen
Customer: Still holding cmd and r
CompExpert :

if frozen then I think you got a defective hard drive.

CompExpert :

what year is your macbook pro?

Customer: 2008
CompExpert :

unibody?

CompExpert :

something like that

CompExpert :

Customer: The wheel thing that turns around at turn stops turning and I have to turn it off by pressing the power buttun
Customer: With the silver keys
CompExpert :

Customer: Is it tough to replace the hard drive?
CompExpert :

early 2008

CompExpert :

not really

CompExpert :

you just need to be careful

CompExpert :

since you have to pop the top off

CompExpert :

hard drive is located bottom left side

CompExpert :

near battery

Customer: I did got it to the desktop and then a bright flashing screen covered the desktop
CompExpert :

like a white dot slowly expanded to the rest of the screen

Customer: All over the screen
CompExpert :

try to go to safe mode, by power off, power on right away hold down shift key

CompExpert :

keep hold it until you boot to osx

Customer: Holding it down a progress bar appears at the bottom of the screen
CompExpert :

just wait

Customer: Keep holding down the shift?
CompExpert :

you can let it go

Customer: The wheel thing is turning
CompExpert :

see if it freeze up

it should take longer than 3-4 minutes
