CompExpert :

hi,
does it freeze right away or it freeze when booting to osx?

CompExpert :

if it freeze during boot process then your hard drive might be defective.

try to remove hard drive from your macbook, power on your system without hard drive

and see if it boot up with a little folder with question mark appear.

CompExpert :

if without the hard drive and system working fine without freezing

CompExpert :

then you need to get a new hard drive

Customer: Got it to the home screen then a bright strobing screen covers the desktop
Customer: Freezes when booting to osx
Customer: It is amacbook pro laptop
CompExpert :

what osx version did you installed on that laptop?

Customer: Lion
CompExpert :

10.5 leopard, 10.6 snow leopard or Lion 10.7

CompExpert :

power off your computer

Customer: Ok
CompExpert :

power on again right away hold down command and R keys

CompExpert :

keep holding it until you get into a mac osx utilities screen

Customer: It is frozen
Customer: Still holding cmd and r
CompExpert :

if frozen then I think you got a defective hard drive.

CompExpert :

what year is your macbook pro?

Customer: 2008
CompExpert :

unibody?

CompExpert :

something like that

CompExpert :

Customer: The wheel thing that turns around at turn stops turning and I have to turn it off by pressing the power buttun
Customer: With the silver keys
CompExpert :

yeah is definitely a bad hard drive

Customer: Is it tough to replace the hard drive?
CompExpert :

early 2008

CompExpert :

not really

CompExpert :

you just need to be careful

CompExpert :

since you have to pop the top off

CompExpert :

hard drive is located bottom left side

CompExpert :

near battery

Customer: I did got it to the desktop and then a bright flashing screen covered the desktop
CompExpert :

like a white dot slowly expanded to the rest of the screen

Customer: All over the screen
CompExpert :

try to go to safe mode, by power off, power on right away hold down shift key

CompExpert :

keep hold it until you boot to osx

Customer: Holding it down a progress bar appears at the bottom of the screen
CompExpert :

just wait

Customer: Keep holding down the shift?
CompExpert :

you can let it go

CompExpert :

booting to safe mode might take a little longer

CompExpert :

go just wait

CompExpert :

*so just wait a little

Customer: The wheel thing is turning
CompExpert :

see if it freeze up

CompExpert :

it should take longer than 3-4 minutes

Customer: It froze up
CompExpert :

seem like that hard drive is defective

CompExpert :

go to computer store buy an sata 2.5 ata hard drive. you can buy any size you want.

dont go over 2tb

CompExpert :

let me show you how to open it up

CompExpert :

around the cover there is about 14 screws

CompExpert :

removed all those screws

CompExpert :

and pop the top cover up

CompExpert :

keyboard come out with the top cover

CompExpert :

something like that

Customer: I am chatting with you on an IPad so pics don't show up
CompExpert :

go here --->> http://echeng.com/journal/2007/04/26/320gb-striped-array-raid-0-macbook-pro/

CompExpert :

should be something like that

CompExpert :

after you take out the cover, you should see the hard drive on the left side

CompExpert :

becareful when remove the cover because you need to disconnect the keyboard cable from top cover to main logic board

CompExpert :

if you pull the cover out too fast

CompExpert :

you will damage that cable

Customer: Ok
Customer: Will I get an email of this conversation?
CompExpert :

no,

just bookmark this page, you can always go back here and look at it

CompExpert :

so after installed new hard drive, just reload your operating system again

CompExpert :

since your hard drive is defective you wont able to back your data

Customer: I have it backed up on time machine
CompExpert :

thats good :)

Customer: I will give it a shot
CompExpert :

  • Hi John, Thank you for your expertise and, more important, for your kindness because they make me, almost, look forward to my next computer problem. After the next problem comes, I'll be delighted to correspond again with you. I'm told that I excel at programing. But system administration has never been one of my talents. So it's great to have an expert to rely on when the computer decides to stump me. God bless, Bill Bill M. Schenectady, New York
