Customer Question

I just firewired the contents of my old imac onto my new imac. on the new imac I'm now prompted to provide a password XXXXX log in to my user account. BUT, when I use my (correct) password, it won't let me in. In the meantime, my old iMac is in transfer mode (and I don't know how to exit from it) and I can't get into the new one.

Hello and welcome to JustAnswer. I look forward to assisting you today with your question and providing the best answer possible.

How did you transferred the contents ? Via Target Disk Mode or Migration Assistant ?

Customer replied 368 days and 14 hours ago.

target disk mode (i.e., I pressed T as my old iMac was booting)

To exit from Target Disk Mode, press and hold down the Power button of your Mac for 10 seconds or until your Mac turns off. To fix the password XXXXX on your new Mac, you can reset the password. I assume you are using Mac OS X Lion on your new iMac. Follow the steps below to reset the password XXXXX your new iMac,

  • Turn off your iMac.
  • Turn in back on and immediately hold down Option at boot and select the “Recovery” disk at the boot menu
  • This will boot your Mac to Mac OS X Utilities” menu
  • Click on the “Utilities” menu and select “Terminal"
  • Type resetpassword
  • Confirm the user account and then the password XXXXX and reboot Mac OS X 10.7 as usual with your new password

Let me know if that didn't worked. Only click Accept after we solved the problem
