If Iphoto is having issues , Please state at what point things go wrong ?
Please let me know how much free space is on your Macintosh HD?
Free space is cause for many issues , we need plenty of free space .
I would like you to make a safe boot also , after your reply .
A safe boot can help fix any Mac HD errors,Turn off the Mac .Power on the Mac .Hold shift on the keyboard using a "USB keyboard or for laptops use the built in keyboard , while powering on the Mac just after the chime and starting up keep holding the Shift key , this should boot to safe mode.Once booted to safe mode , restart and boot as normal .Full details here :-http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1455
You can book mark this web page to return here after .
Cannot connect - the wheel just goes round and round
, can you explain this more fully ?
Does the Mac run ok apart from iphoto.
mac runs ok except iphoto
ok, so iphoto spin wheel color wheel on launch . .
Spin wheel has no color
Is free space on Mac ? how much ?
I would also like you too :
It maybe time to trash the iphoto preferences file , " com.apple.iPhoto.plist ".Please Trash the plist file , " com.apple.iPhoto.plist " .Found in the Mac HD / Users / Youruser / Library / Preferences / com.apple.iPhoto.plistIf your using Lion , Use Finder Go menu , Got to folder - to get to the folder . Paste : ~/Library/Preferences/ , hit Enter .Reboot and then launch iPhoto and test .Please provide all details of the remaining problem if any after the repairs are carried out to the Mac HD OSX installation , including what applications are affected .Please let me know if you need any extra info regarding the above?I will give full instructions to do so if necessary.
how can I determine amount of free space?
Your Mac HD , is the Hard drive , select the Mac HD , and hit cmd i .
if you cant see the mac HD icon on the desktop , open a fonder window and do same .
cmd i = get info .
get info will display size info etc .
or select item , right click , get info .
or use Activity monitor .
Activity monitor , found in Applications / utilities folder on your Mac HD.
with the Monitor tool open , choose Disk usage . Then choose your Mac HD.
Space free is stated .
How do I get to applications folder?
I'm using a laptop. What is a fonder you refer to?
See photo to obtain Free space info .
also , in reply , applications folder , to open . :
Move mouse to the Dock , Click on Finder .
A Finder window opens , Click on Applications , from the Left hand list near the top ..
Are you there?
how much space is remaining ? and what is total size?
What kind of mac do you have , and what CPU ?
You can do , Apple menu , about this mac . for OSX version and CPU type.
If using Activity Monitor , the Drives total size is shown under the pie chart .
Mac OS X 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
ok , How about drive size , and free space ?
and what OSX version ?
Mac OSX 10.??
23.78 GB free space Version10.6.8
whats the drive size? total .
Did you try deleting the plist?
Please Trash the plist file , " com.apple.iPhoto.plist " .Found in the Mac HD / Users / Youruser / Library / Preferences / com.apple.iPhoto.plist
Your free space is ok for now , but you are running low , and if the iphoto library is large?? we cant rebuild it untill space is freed up . .
Whats the size of the Pictures folder in your user folder?
Get info on the picture folder in the finder , cmd i .
Pictures folder. .
How do I find the drive size? How do I get to the User folder?
Drive size 249.72 GB : Unable to find user folder
ok thanks ,
Ok do you see your Mac HD icon on the desktop ?
Full name , Macintosh HD.
? If you dont?? , we can fix that to make things more easy.
Ok , Close all open windows . so you just see the desktop .
Top screen menu bar , Finder menu , Preferences
The finder prefs are now , open ..
Now see general .
Now tick on all the boxes .
Disks will now show on the desktop . Very handy . \
Then close the panel .
Now we see the Mac HD icon on the desktop.. ok ?
To open the Mac HD , double click on it .
you want to :
Open Mac HD , then Users , then your user name .
Opened Mac then users but my name does not appear
Ok , Your user name is the name of your user account.
It just says users
yes , open users .
inside is your user folder.
open the user folder . then see your user account folder .
open that also .
in your user folder you will see the
Pictures folder .
Select it with one left click .
Then hit , cmd i .
get info is open for pictures folder , size is displayed in the penel .
The Pictures folder contains your complete iPhoto Library . So Finding the Size of the folder or the iPhoto Libarys within , will tell us the size .
Handy to know at this point . .
Your free space is running low , letting it runn even lower will affect the Macs speed and make it more unstable .
20gB is fine . But we must be careful .
For instance , two HD downloads of videos etc youd be out of space , installing a large Game youd be out of space . and so on .
4 KB on disc
4kb on disk ?
it must state pIctures .
4kb is empty .
Can you try again , also , you can open the pictures folder and select the actual iphoto library .
and use get info . on i t.
size 719.9MB on disc 706,422,590 bytes
ok is this size for the pictures folder stated on get info panel .
719.9 MB on disc 706,422,590 bytes
or the iPhoto Library ..? So you dont have that many photos then , is this true ?
200 photos etc ?
if this is true , then we can move on knowing that there is enough free space to work .
can you tell me how many photos you expect to have ? to the nearest 500 .
This will give me an idea of the total size expected .
to compare to the size of 800mb you stated .
do you use iPhoto much , many photos in ?
ok that sound about right , if your camera is not a Pro spec high res camra etc .
is the camera res , say 3 mega pixels .
i.e a consumer camera or phone camera ? not HD .
no, cannon powershot a 75 3 mega pix but thimnking about getting 1phone 4s
each photo would be around 500k . jpgs etc . to match the size .
so 500k x 1500 = 750mb . etc .
so ok thats looking correct .
Now lets find the plist and remove it .
close the open windows .
open the Mac HD , users , your user ,
?? as u can tell i am highly tech ignorant!
Now see the Library folder . inside your user name folder .
Once in the User name , Library folder , Open the Preferences folder .
So navigate to the Preferences folder , find the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file , and drag it to the trash can .
This is the Basic settings file for iphoto .
Removing it may fix the issue .
once removed , empty the trash .
Finder menu , empty trash .
ok so far?
Ok plist trashed ?
ok , now open iPhoto , hopefully it will open without hitch .
no change the wheel keeps on spinning
Are you sure you removed the plist from the full path ,inside your user folder ?
if so , we can try the next step .
You may need to rebuild your iphoto library!
You will need to firce quit iPhoto if its still hung ,but not open , you must quit i t.
Force quit . typo .
do you know how to force Quit?
you can reboot the mac if needed .
heres how to rebuild :
This should get you up and running again , or you may be presented with the following options :1) rebuild the photos' small thumbnails2) rebuild all of the photos' thumbnails (this may take a while)3) rebuild the iphoto library database4) recover orphaned photos in the iphoto library folder5) examine and repair iphoto library file permissionsPlease carry out the options for repair / rebuild of the iphoto library in the order below:3) rebuild the iphoto library database. If needed.5) examine and repair iphoto library file permissions. If needed.2) rebuild all of the photos' thumbnails .You should run a full repair on your Mac HD and repair permissions also for Mac HD .You may fix issues that are related and more wide spread , a possible cause for the problem with iphoto library . .
I have no idea how to do any of this! Is there a manual you could recommend
Hi its very easy .
ok heres what ot do..
Hold down the CMD & Alt while opening iPhoto and select rebuild library...
Then tick on all those options . and rebuild .
ok howd it go?
Did it open with options to rebuild?
Did not work. Should we do the force quit Option?
If the panel to rebuild did not open , force quit iphoto or reboot and try again . you must hold the keys . cmd & alt before pressing on iPhoto in the Dock .
Can you also check for updates using , Apple menu , Software update .
Panel to rebuild opened, checked all panels but wheel kept spinning!
Ok , problem remains.
Do you have your OSX install DVD or apps DVD?
Ok will try another way .
Quit iPhoto , if its stuck ?? Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function.http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/
I will run you though , first download and get the app .
using the tool , and rebuild will rebuild the library , to a new file named : iPhoto Library Rebuilt . To the same location as the current iPhoto Library . i.e in the Youruser name , Pictures folder .
got it downloaded. what's next?
once the iPhoto Library is rebuilt , we can then choose it for use while opening iPhoto , Hold down the Option key on the keyboard and open iPhoto.Keep the Option key held down until you are prompted to create or choose an iPhoto library.
open the iPhoto manager .
the app windows opens , and you iPhoto lib should be selected already in the app window .
and your ..
with a blue dot .
Once the iPhoto manager is open and the current iPhoto library is selected "blue dot" , Go to the Top screen menus , File menu , Choose Rebuild Library .
Now the Lib will be rebuilt , without using iPhoto to do it , avoiding problems.
Wait for it to complete , do nothing while it goes through the task unless asked. .
it can take 20mins or more to rebuild . .
Once rebuilt , youd have two iPhoto Libs , the old one , + a new one named iPhoto Library Rebuilt. .
once this is ok and done, close the app and then launch like this below :
we can then choose the new lib for use while opening iPhoto , Hold down the Option key on the keyboard and open iPhoto.Keep the Option key held down until you are prompted to create or choose an iPhoto library.
Choose the rebuilt lib , then continue .
File menu does not show "choose rebuilt library"
iPhoto should open the new lib , if the issue was with the lib , then iPhoto should now open ok and work.
File menu in iPhoto tool , rebuild library , or hit cmd r.
iPhoto library manager, file menu , rebuild library .
File menu does not show "Rebuilt Library"
your not reading it right ,.
open the app iPhoto manager.
see onscreen , select your iPhoto lib , is it selected ?
Can't find app Iphoto manager! I know it downloaded
ok so you need to install i t.
did you install it ?
I must go to a meeting - will check back in later this afternoon!
what web browser? ,. down downloads in Safari etc , then open the DMG .
ok no problem , I will try to get back to you , Im in the UK , and will be out most of the day tommorow .
the download panel in safari , has a button to open the download or double click the download name .
it should open , drag the app to the desktop to install .
Ok will get there ,
Dont miss your appointment, just reply once your back try to familiarize yourself with the options and tools. .
Is the download in safari in "services" image capture?
your user folder , downloads.
just use the finder.
Mac HD , users , your user , Downloads .
thanks signing out now but will be back later --will try to review tonight so i can do better tomorrow!
almost there I think .
The project was not completed. As you can tell iteachmac says "almost there I think" but we never got Iphoto restored!
