NickMacIT :

Hi and welcome to JustAnswer.com.

My name is Nick and I will assist you with your issues.

What error message or code do you get?

Customer :

1418

NickMacIT :

thanks and the message

Customer :

I don't remember other than "trouble restoring the iPod" clicking on additional information told me error 1418

NickMacIT :

thanks

NickMacIT :

so you want to restore your ipod?

Customer :

yes please, it wouldn't sync, so I had to restore it, then it wouldn't restore, but the music has been wiped. so it is currently empty

NickMacIT :

please click iTunes and go to Preferences

NickMacIT :

go to devices and select Reset sync history.

Customer :

there is no reset sync history under my devices...

NickMacIT :

you went to Preferences?

Customer :

yup. then to devices it is all faded gray. the only thing i can do it two options: prevent devices from syncing automatically, or allow use of remotes

NickMacIT :

have you restart your computer?

Customer :

yeah, then i tried again and it didn't work, so I came here. But i have not tried to restart a second time.

NickMacIT :

wait

NickMacIT :

give me a second to pull out the fix steps

Customer :

k, also since i last tried it does not even recognized my iPod is plugged in, but the iPod still wants me to eject it I dont know how

NickMacIT :

it does not recognized your ipod?

NickMacIT :

do you hear any sound when you plug in your ipod?

NickMacIT :

Please go to applications ->utilities->Disk Utility

Customer :

no, but my external speakers dont work so i wouldnt. it recognized it when i plugged it in, but after it told me the error message and sent me to troubleshooting it went away

NickMacIT :

your ipod is classic nano or touch?

Customer :

classic. the 160gb

Customer :

that tells me to select a disc or volume

NickMacIT :

please reset your ipod by Press and hold the Play/Pause and Menu buttons simultaneously until the Apple/iPod logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds

NickMacIT :

while it is plugged in

Customer :

done

NickMacIT :

is it restarting?

Customer :

yup, said "no music" and now i think it is trying to sync

Customer :

desktop does show device

NickMacIT :

that's fine

NickMacIT :

is it syncing right now?

Customer :

no, it was doing the turn arrows, but stopped, i cant pull up my itunes now though.its minimized in the corner and wont let me pull it up

NickMacIT :

Please go to applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility

NickMacIT :

select the ipod from the list

NickMacIT :

then click erase

Customer :

its not on the list

Customer :

but the itunes all came back and is asking my to try restoring it again.

NickMacIT :

do you see the ipod on desktop?

Customer :

no it is gone again

NickMacIT :

exit itunes

NickMacIT :

then unplug and plug back ipod.

Customer :

without ejecting it? cause i cant figure out how

NickMacIT :

now do you see the ipod on desktop?

NickMacIT :

just unplug the cord

Customer :

yes its back

NickMacIT :

now go back disk utility

NickMacIT :

do you see it?

Customer :

yes, but there is no erase option. repair disc?

NickMacIT :

so you selected the ipod?

NickMacIT :

do you see Erase option on the right?

Customer :

yeah, i did find it. i selected erase and just as i was about to do the final erase, iTunes popped up and told me to restore and the icon left the desktop. subsequently left the utilities. how do I know if it worked?

NickMacIT :

one second

NickMacIT :

do you see ipod under Devices on iTunes?

Customer :

yes

Customer :

do i eject it or try to restore it again?

NickMacIT :

wait

NickMacIT :

do you see Options under Summary?

Customer :

in itunes?

NickMacIT :

yes

Customer :

it has the device screen up, how do i get to where i can see options under summary?

Customer :

looks like i am under the summary

NickMacIT :

yes

NickMacIT :

scroll down until you see options

Customer :

there is no scroll down, just shows the device. the only option i have is to resore

NickMacIT :

can you click cancel?

Customer :

also in my icon bar i just noticed the box icon that it registered the ipod as when i was in the utilities

Customer :

i see no cancel. you mean quit itunes? i think i can do that

NickMacIT :

now go back to disk utilities

NickMacIT :

do you see ipod?

NickMacIT :

we are trying to format the ipod

NickMacIT :

without itunes

Customer :

nope, it is not on the desktop either

Customer :

close itunes then? and should i try to eject it from itunes?

NickMacIT :

please eject the ipod

NickMacIT :

on itunes go to preferences

NickMacIT :

go to devices

NickMacIT :

check the box prevents ipod...from syncing automatically

Customer :

k, now unplug it and re plug it and go to utilities and erase?

NickMacIT :

yes

Customer :

do i restart the ipod while it is unplugged or just re plug?

NickMacIT :

restart your ipod while unplug

Customer :

the mac os extended (journaled) is the default format, is that what i want for the erasing?

NickMacIT :

fat

Customer :

NickMacIT :

DOS i mean

NickMacIT :

Customer :

NickMacIT :

you can leave it as default.

NickMacIT :

Customer :

it did not give me an error message this time, but it said could not restore cause it could not be found

NickMacIT :

Customer :

Customer :

if it couldn't find it should i be able to unplug it and restart it and replug it and start over like it is a new ipod?

  1. Disconnect all iOS devices from your computer and quit iTunes.
  2. From the Finder, choose Go > Go to folder.
  3. Type the following and then press Return:
    /var/db/lockdown
  4. The Finder window should display one or more files with long alphanumeric file names.
  5. In the Finder, choose Edit > Select all. Then, choose File > Move to Trash. Enter an administrator password if prompted.
Note: Do not delete the Lockdown folder itself. Delete only the files contained inside the Lockdown folder.
  6. Reconnect your iOS device and open iTunes.
NickMacIT :

Please try these steps

Customer :

NickMacIT :

had you ever backed up this ipod on this mac?

Customer :

no, i bought it second hand, and he erased his user and put in mine. when i turn it on I am the only one listed

Customer :

NickMacIT :

select Preferences->accounts

NickMacIT :

NickMacIT :

then you can create a new user by clicking the + at bottom left.

NickMacIT :

Please bookmark this page

NickMacIT :

so you can go back here

Customer :

NickMacIT :

I will wait here

NickMacIT :

come back here and let me know

NickMacIT :

if not working

Customer :

ok

NickMacIT :

I will try to find a solution for you

NickMacIT :

can I get your name please?

NickMacIT :

I will step out for an hour.

NickMacIT :

Just let me know if you could do it or still get error.

NickMacIT :

I will check back with you

NickMacIT :

Or you can try this solution I just found:

Step 1: Run Terminal from Application > Utilities.

Step 2: Type the following command "privateo/etc" in the Open text box. Find the "hosts" file in the directoty and open it with text editor.

Step 3: Find the lines with gs.apple.com entries in the opened "hosts" file. Then enter # at start of the line or simply delete the lines.

Step 4: Save the "hosts" under the same directory. Then you can restore your devices.

Customer :

nope. no success with the other user

Customer :

i cant run terminal, it is nothing just opens up to nonsense and dont know how to do anythinpast step one

Customer :

if i don't put this away to deal with later i will throw my computer against a wall and i know that is bad for it. I am going to get some sleep, and will try plugging my ipod into another computer and hopefully the reformatting it is forced to do that way will work and I can try again in my computer

NickMacIT :

Thanks so much. I will see you tomorrow.
