My iPhoto library recently crashed and I had to rebuild it.

Customer Question

My iPhoto library recently crashed and I had to rebuild it. After that I spent a few days just reorienting the photos. Now suddenly the thumbnails don't correspond in orientation to the photos when I click on them. And if I move from one full photo to the next, sometimes I get just an asterisk, which doesn't correspond to the thumbnails. What is going on?

Customer:

Welcome ,I will give a full and clear answer to your question, please make sure to reply to any questions I have. They may be essential to my reply.

Customer:

Hi sounds like an issue with the library .

Customer:

Best try this first .

Customer:

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function.
http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/

basically the library has a problem .

Customer:

You may want to do a safe boot also just in case of Mac HD errors . .

Customer:

SAFE BOOT >

Turn off the Mac .

Power on the Mac .

Hold shift on the keyboard using a USB keyboard , while powering on the Mac and booting , boot to safe mode.

Once booted to safe mode , restart and boot as normal .

Full details here :-
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1455

Customer:

Does this help .

Customer:

Thanks .

Customer :

Hi,

Customer :

I'm definitely not a techie, so boot means?

Customer :

And will it boot to safe mode just by my holding down the shift?

Customer :

Also I'm wondering now whether I even checked the photos. Perhaps I just rotated the thumbnails. I have over 20,000 photos so I probably just steamed ahead without checking, and only because my shuffle started (it's my going to sleep mode), did I notice all the photos askew--well, most of them. I've been re-working the Paris photos since my first message to just answer this morning, one by one, not thirty thumbnails at a time.

Customer :

I won't know if the answer is satisfactory until I try it out. I just checked the full details link. So I will proceed. I must be at work at 6:30 tonight, and haven't begun to shower or shave. I should be back by 11PM, so if there is a lapse of time, please don't think I've skipped out on you.

Customer :

So I guess that's my reply, and I should hit the reply button. I've been hitting my return key.

Customer :

I don't seem to be able to shut the computer down, probably linked to my hitting the accept button when I don't know whether the solution will work. Am I paying for each accept whether it works or not?

Customer :

I'd better get ready for work, and maybe there will be some clarification before I leave or by the time I get back.

Customer :

I'm running off to work--that's backstage at Carnegie Hall. Every show has its own timing. Tonight it's a master class by Renee Fleming in the new small hall at Carnegie. I should be back around somewhere between 10:45 and 12 midnight.

Customer:

I'm definitely not a techie, so boot means?

, that means , turn on the computer normally .

Customer:

And will it boot to safe mode just by my holding down the shift?

yes while powering on .

Customer:

20,000 photos , yes rebuild the library using the tool it will take awhile ,

Customer:

ok check back with you in the morning .

Customer:

I will work with you till we get some results .

Customer:

Thanks .

Customer :

Thanks, XXXXX XXXXX I started up in safe mode. But hitting the thumbnails in safe mode gave me no result at all. No response. I did rebuild the photo library after it crashed last week, but the out-of-sync thumbnails, out of sync with the full-sized photos began with the rebuild, or maybe before that, with the original crash. So should I rebuild again? In any case, I've forgotten how to do that. I guess I could ask the computer. But maybe tomorrow would be best. At this rate I won't even see morning. My amp also died this week. Someone's coming over with a possible replacement. So photos and sound both went haywire.

Customer:

Hi ,

Customer:

So should I rebuild again?

Customer:

Yes .

Customer:

but ,

Customer:

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function.
http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/

Customer:

do this now while booted normally.

Customer:

Hope the audio problem gets fixed as well .

Customer:

Thanks.

Customer:

If you get stuck please ask for more details .

Customer :

Hey Duke,

Customer :

All the communications with JustAnswer were going into my junk mail--just discovered it. Couldn't login because my password XXXXX working, and the resets were also going into the junk mail. Then I couldn't come up with an available username (not even jubjub?)--gave up. Then when I was back, I tried to send you a similar message to this one, and it was treated as a new question. But I'm back, and you're offline.

Customer:

Hi , no problem these things happen .

Customer:

any progress ?

Customer :

No I just broke through to the site.

Customer :

The thumbnails are in some kind of sync with my photos, but not correct sync. Will the iPhoto manager be able to fix that?

Customer :

When iPhoto first crashed, I was seeing thick black chalk-textured lines drawn through the thumbnails. Is my whole computer breaking down?

Customer :

If I rotate the thumbnail, the full photo will also rotate, but not point in the same direction. But some of them are perfectly matched. It's not consistent. I think it reverted to straight from the camera mode because landscape orientation on the full photo never needs rotation.

Customer :

OK, I'm going to download the iPhoto Library Manager. Even though I rebuilt last week, I don't remember how long rebuilding lasted (20,000 photos plus). I probably walked out on it. Perhaps I should back up my photos first. I just got an external hard drive but did not succeed in putting on my music and photo libraries. I guess I should do that first. But it seems I'd be putting this confused version of my photos on it.

Customer :

A fixed version would make a better back-up but losing everything would be terrible. I'm also thinking it may be time for a new computer.

Customer:

Will the iPhoto manager be able to fix that? perhaps , the rebuild tool it has is better than the one built in to iphoto on startup . .

Customer :

Oh I don't know whether hitting the accept button means case closed, payment delivered, end of story, next question. Do I hit it only when my iPhoto is working?

Customer:

Is my whole computer breaking down? , there could be a problem , can you explain more?

Customer:

Perhaps I should back up my photos first , you can do that , but the rebuild tool should not harm anything .

Customer:

external hard drive : is the drive set up for mac use ?

Customer :

Well the black chalk marks through the thumbnails from top to bottom of the page were strange.

Customer:

Check format , select the drive icon , Press , CMD i , for get info , the format of the external should be displayed along with other info such as its name .

Customer:

If the drive is fat 32 , you will have to format it . ? let me know .

Customer:

if the drive is Mac OSX extended format , then this should be fine .

Customer :

I believe it is--got it from an apple store. It's a g-drive mini.

Customer:

Hi , leave that till last ,

Customer :

Should I plug in the drive?

Customer:

Hi , leave that till last ,

pressing accept that i s.

Customer :

Leave the backup till last?

Customer:

Should I plug in the drive?

, yes . and lets check the format .

Customer :

Plugged in.

Customer:

ok

Customer:

do you see the drives icon , on the desktop?

Customer :

I also have time capsule.

Customer :

Looking for icon.

Customer:

ok if you dont see the icon .

Customer:

Click on the finder .

Customer:

Then go to the top menu , finder menu , preferences .

Customer:

when the panel opens , check on all the boxes for show on desktop . .

Customer:

once done close the panel .

Customer:

you should see your Mac HD , and the external on the desktop .

Customer:

ok?

Customer :

Not yet.

Customer:

I believe it is--got it from an apple store. It's a g-drive mini.

, ok but lets check .

Customer :

Much clutter on desktop.

Customer:

when you see the external drives icon on the desktop top , select it with one click .

Customer:

then hit CMD i .

Customer:

get info will open .

Customer:

if you have clutter , just make a new folder on the desktop , and move the mess to the folder , drag and drop to it .

Customer:

also you can do , Finder , view menu , sort by kind .

Customer:

hard drives and externals with be top right .

Customer :

I just turned the drive off and on. Maybe that will help it to appear.

Customer:

ok . can you see your mac HD on the desktop yet?

Customer:

You stated you also have a time capsule , if its setup and working with time machine you should have a backup already .

Customer :

When I try to open to the desk top itself, not the launch pad, it asks me if I want to leave this page. I'm afraid to cut the umbilical cord.
And in fact it would be a bad idea.

Customer:

the desktop , is not the launch pad .

Customer:

The desktop is the screen background with the desktop picture .

Customer:

the picture you see when you login .

Customer :

I noticed a few days ago that time capsule was not working, and I did manage to get it going on my own. But there is no pre-iPhoto crash record there.

Customer:

i.e if you close all windows , and click on the back ground picture , that is the desktop .

Customer:

ok .

Customer:

so lets back up to the new external just incase .

Customer:

do you see the external drives icon ?

Customer:

you can see this on the desktop .

Customer:

but make the setting:

Click on the finder .

6:23 PM

Then go to the top menu , finder menu , preferences .

6:24 PM

when the panel opens , check on all the boxes for show on desktop . .

6:24 PM

once done close the panel .

6:24 PM

you should see your Mac HD , and the external on the desktop .

Customer :

Now that I think about it I may not have see my desktop in quite awhile.

Customer:

Customer :

Found my desktop!

Customer:

make the settings like this ,

Customer:

You should now see your mac Hd and any externals that are mounted.

Customer :

I did get those settings right--had to add a check to the 4th.

Customer:

Ok can you see the external drive icon , and your Macintosh HD icon

Customer :

Found my g-drive mini.

Customer:

Ok , good ,

Customer:

Select it , with one click ,. .

Customer:

Then CMD i . on the keyboard .

Customer :

Desk top is actually listed as desktop 2.

Customer:

hold CMD , and press i.

Customer:

no problem , in lion , or snow leopard that is the desktop . there maybe more than one is use .

Customer:

do you see the get info for the g drive .

Customer:

in get info for the G drive does it state under format : Mac OS Extended (Journaled) .

Customer :

If I highlight G-Drive I get just back ups back up db.

Customer :

Time Capsule or Time Machine is going now. Is that an influence?

Customer:

ok you must have used it with timemachine .

Customer:

This is ok .

Customer:

ok

Customer:

so you can open the drive to see what is inside .

Customer:

ok that is where we will copy the iphoto library , by hand .

Customer :

I don't remember. By now you see that I sort of just stumble around in this techie paradise.

Customer:

in the g drive , make a new folder named , iphoto backup 2012 .

Customer:

once you have made the folder , let me know .

Customer :

Maybe I'm not on the right page.

Customer:

?

Customer:

Do you know how to make a new folder?

Customer:

We want to make a backup of the iphoto library yes , that is current?

Customer:

stored on your G drive .

Customer:

in the G drive , open it .

Customer:

Them make a new folder inside ,

Customer :

Amazing what I don't know.

Customer:

using : Finder menu , File , New folder .

Customer:

no problem .

Customer:

we can make this where , we will store the backup .

Customer:

after the folder is in place , on the g drive . , we can copy the file .

Customer:

let me know , once you have a folder , on the g drive , named iphoto backup 2012 .

Customer :

Got the folder but I didn't name it. Just says new folder.

Customer:

Ok to name it , just click on the name once , wait , then once more .

Customer:

you should then be able to type a name .

Customer :

I think I did that but will try again.

Customer:

ok the text will turn blue , when you can type .

Customer :

One click seems to turn it purple.

Customer:

click on the current name , once , then again .

Customer:

a short wait between clicks .

Customer:

about 1 second .

Customer :

Got it.

Customer:

ok

Customer:

Cool ,

Customer:

so you now have the folder in place .

Customer :

I'm hard work. Sorry.

Customer :

Folder in place.

Customer:

you can open the folder ready to copy the iphoto library to it .

Customer:

I will give you details how .

Customer:

do you know how to use copy and paste?

Customer:

we can copy and paste the file to the new location folder .

Customer :

Yes, I've written two novels.

Customer:

ok we can copy and paste , a file also , just like you would text .

Customer:

the copy paste buttons , are CMD C , copy .

Customer:

CMD V paste .

Customer:

ok so we now need to copy the file .

Customer:

the file is named iphoto library . I will guide you to it .

Customer:

on the desktop you see your Mac HD icon , open it .

Customer:

then open Users ,

Customer:

then open your User name .

Customer:

then open , Pictures .

Customer:

in the folder named , Pictures . you should see the file named , iPhoto library .

Customer :

I'm right there.

Customer:

ok

Customer:

do you see the file.

Customer:

also is there only one file named that ?

Customer:

normally there will be only one iPhoto library .

Customer :

I have iPhoto library 1 and 2, plus many other pics, don't know if they're dups

Customer:

ok , to be sure , select all the files . so they are highlighted .

Customer :

You are bringing light to darkness.

Customer:

you can select them all by dragging a box over the names .

Customer :

Including the ones that are not in the iPhoto library?

Customer:

you can do to be sure .

Customer :

Dragging a box

Customer:

to select all , you can use the finder menu , edit , select all .

Customer:

then hit copy , CMD C .

Customer:

be sure they are all selected .

Customer:

do not hit paste yet.

Customer:

once you have selected the files , and hit copy , CMD C . the files are held in a buffer to be pasted .

Customer:

once copy is made , go back to the folder you made , iphoto backup 2012 , and click inside it .

Customer:

once you are inside the iphoto backup folder on your g drive , Hit CMD V .

Customer:

the files should be pasted to the new location , leaving the old files alone .

Customer :

CMD C--type that in caps?

Customer:

no .

Customer :

Command control

Customer:

CMD is a key , you hold this , c is a key you press this once .

Customer:

CMD key is next to the space bar .

Customer:

to copy , Hold CMD , then tap C .

Customer:

or you can used the edit menu . Copy .

Customer:

using the EDIt menu from the finder , copy . is the same as the keyboard shortcut , CMD C .

Customer :

Done

Customer:

ok once copy , move to the folder you made , and click in side it .

Customer:

with a left click .

Customer:

once the folder is selected inside , Press CMD V paste . or edit menu paste.

Customer :

then what is cmd v?

Customer :

ah paste

Customer:

what ever you copied last will be pasted .

Customer:

CMD V = paste . or same as Finder edit menu , Paste .

Customer:

only tap this once .

Customer:

or you will paste it twice . :)

Customer :

25000 items being copied now.

Customer:

if you pasted correctly , the files should start to copy .

Customer:

Wait .

Customer:

it will take a while , to calculate , and then make the copy .

Customer :

How many years?

Customer:

once the files are there , check or compare to the Pictures folder contents , i.e you should have the same amount of files in both folders. .

Customer:

depending on drive speed and the amount of files , it could take 25 mins .

Customer:

make a coffee .

Customer :

Thanks, XXXXX XXXXX had breakfast.

Customer:

Be sure that no error , made in the copy . if an error occurs , a panel may pop up stating the error . lets hope not .

Customer :

You are working miracles.

Customer:

does it state a time as yet?

Customer :

I heard a thud at one point, but checked it--no problem showing.

Customer:

ok thanks , once this is complete , you have a backup of the entire Pictures folder , independent from time machine.

Customer:

ok , a time on progress ?

Customer :

I'm not seeing a time listing.

Customer :

am I looking in the wrong place. could it have finished?

Customer:

on the small window for the copy procure .

Customer:

procedure . umm

Customer:

you can check the copy is completed by , comparing the files in the backup folder to the Picutres folder . the easy way is by file size .

Customer:

the two folders should be the same size .

Customer:

select the Pictures folder icon , with one left click .

Customer:

then hit CMD i , for get info .

Customer:

The folders name and file size is listed .

Customer:

make a mental note .

Customer:

do the same for the iPhoto backup 2012 folder , and compare size .

Customer:

the size , should be the same if the copy is completed .

Customer:

i.e the folders Get info file size , is the combined total of its contents , compare the two folders to be sure . .

Customer:

Normally a copy will complete ok , and once proved ok , lets move on to trying the rebuild using the tool.

Customer:

So now you know how to copy files , name a folder , etc and get info for file / folder sizes , thats good.

Customer:

using a computer these days , is a bit like a actual office , we need to store files etc in folders, for tidiness but also for reference.

Customer:

Some time from now , you will see that you have a folder named iphoto backup 2012 on the G drive . and you will know its the backup we made of the whole Pictures folder in the year 2012 .

Customer:

Ok Note:

Customer:

The file named : iPhoto Library is actually just another folder .

Customer:

But , you cant open it normally .

Customer:

the file contains all the photos in use in a given iPhoto Library .

Customer:

if you have more than one iPhoto library , you may what to check if there the same , or one is broken or not used anymore.

Customer:

i.e when you load iPhoto the app , it chooses an iPhoto Library to view . it can only view one at a time .

Customer:

to choose a library to view in iPhoto , you must quit iPhoto .

Customer:

then on the keyboard , Hold the ALT key .

Customer:

then while holding , launch iPhoto .

Customer:

a panel opens with a choice to choose a library .

Customer:

with that said ,

Customer:

Ok .

Customer:

make sure iPhoto is quid , and let me know once your here .

Customer:

quit

Customer:

.

Customer:

not quid.

Customer:

o_0

Customer :

They are the same size. That was fast--much faster than I was.

Customer:

ok :)

Customer:

what is the file size?

Customer :

alt key?

Customer:

ok what was the file size , I have an idea of what it should be .

Customer :

1.35 GB

Customer:

ok , 1.35 gb .

Customer:

there are some photos in the folder .

Customer:

not sure if all you photos are there.

Customer :

I travel plenty. Where are you located?

Customer:

Do you know what a single photo files size is for your camera , ?

Customer:

Im in the UK . close to London , you ?

Customer :

Tanzania, South Africa, China, all over Europe, London too. I was a Brit Lit major.

Customer:

if we calc , your single photo size , x 20000 it should be around the total size of the folder . if not some data may be missing .

Customer:

did you say 2000 photos or 20,000

Customer:

?

Customer :

Lately I've just been using my iPhone. But I took a great camera to Africa.

Customer:

approx

Customer:

ok . file size for each photo will vari . from 400k to 2mb .

Customer :

24,400 photos.

Customer:

ok 24k .

Customer:

I think some are missing or stored else where. but not in the iphoto lib .

Customer:

lets go step by step .

Customer:

Ok , quit iPhoto .

Customer :

done

Customer:

install , and open iPhoto library manager .

Customer:

in the tool , we can do a number of jobs .

Customer:

these jobs cant be made in iphoto , as iphoto is limited .

Customer:

hence the tool .

Customer:

do you have the tool launched now and see the panel .

Customer :

Yes I have the panel.

Customer:

ok

Customer:

in the panel , do you see one iphoto library selected .

Customer:

selected with a blue dot the left .

Customer:

is there once one or is there two ? to be selected ?

Customer:

only one ?

Customer :

Yes--with fewer photos than in the whole pic file. I knew some were missing.

Customer:

ok , is there one or two libs ?

Customer:

I knew from the file size something was amiss .

Customer :

Blue dot--just one listing: says iPhoto library_3

Customer:

Ok , lib3 , and no other libs listed ?

Customer :

Right

Customer:

we shall deal with this one first .

Customer:

there may be a way to recover the others , if there is a backup on the timemachine .

Customer:

But first .

Customer:

Lets rebuild the lib 3 , make a mental note of the name .

Customer:

to rebuild , select the lib blue dot in the panel .

Customer:

Then ,.

Customer:

Go File menu , Rebuild Library .

Customer:

A file requester will open .

Customer:

It should point to the Pictures folder ,

Customer :

yes

Customer:

save the file as rebuilt .

Customer:

iPhoto Library (rebuilt)

Customer:

so once completed , there will be a new rebuilt , iPhoto lib named , iPhoto Library (rebuilt) . stored in the Pictures folder.

Customer:

Now the tool will do its job .

Customer :

So I just hit the create button?

Customer:

Yes .

Customer:

iPhoto should open during the job .

Customer:

Just sit back and let it do it for you .

Customer :

My life is spinning before my eyes.

Customer:

yes ,

Customer:

many photos . :)

Customer:

where are you located?

Customer :

New York City

Customer:

NYC Ok .

Customer :

Manhattan, Greenwich Village

Customer :

I work backstage at Carnegie Hall.

Customer:

Ok , once this is complete you can also copy and paste the new Rebuilt lib from Pictures folder , to the iPhoto backup 2012 folder on your G drive .

Customer:

backstage at Carnegie Hall. , nice , what do you do , I also create sound design .

Customer:

ok , I bet its still chugging away .

Customer :

Wow. I'm a backstage attendant. That means I'm sort of a stage manager--but the more professional the group the more they bring their own. So then I'm just doing places calls, getting the maestro down to the stage, ringing house chimes, making sure they're all happy.

Customer :

processing file 112 of 591.

Customer :

Every once in awhile it asks me whether I want to download a dupe, even though I hit no for all cases.

Customer :

Up to Tanzania. Most of the files are right side up.

Customer:

Job sounds super .

Customer :

At least in the thumbnails.

Customer:

dupes , not sure best check as you go along . .

Customer:

Most of the files are right side up. ok , good news .

Customer :

kenspocket your website?

Customer:

the rotation tag is normally stored inside the photos tags for JPGs . how they are currently set with be used in the import / rebuild . etc .

Customer:

website yes .

Customer:

Can I save the whole chat after we're done?

Customer:

you can hook it up to the hifi and leave it , then plug your mac in to it for use .

Customer :

I hate to say it, I don't play any instruments. Just push a pen around.

Customer:

the audio analog on the Mac is ok , but not great . so decent audio interface is a notch up .

Customer:

Or you can use an external DAC , to convert from optical digital to analog line RCA .

Customer :

Is it pointless to match the Shengya with it?

Customer:

option one or , the stand alone DAC , is the best option .

Customer:

if you compare some life is missing from a decent audio IO to the Macs built in sound out.

Customer:

Mostly treble is not as clear .

Customer:

anyway hows , the iPhoto lib going?

Customer:

Would installing my new amp interfere with the download of the pics if it's still going on three hours from now?

Customer:

hi , no , as long as you dont unplug the mac ,

Customer:

dont quit anything or log out etc .

Customer:

you can launch itunes , if you want in the front as long as you know this does not crash the mac . .

Customer:

normally it will be ok.

Customer:

plugging in the audio jack wont affect anything .

Customer:

you can use a airtunes router , for itunes to route audio wireless to the amp .

Customer:

but I dont think it will improve the sound , using the local WIFI in the home . .

but handy .

Customer:

also a neat trick , to impress friends . look no hands .

Do you suspect you have a problem with the Mac HD ? other than the photos issue? I know a way to test fully .

Customer:

hard drives do wear out , iv changed two this week both apple .

Customer :

You've been spectacular on a number of fronts. How do I make sure you get credit for all your help? And how do I save all the info on the sound--I've got to be able to translate it.

Customer:

ok ,

Customer :

The computer now is responding even to my typing very slowly.

Customer:

When you press accept ,there should be an option to give bonus , wait till we finish tho.

Customer:

second , the page can be view here , on your JA account , to view , make a book mark .

Customer:

or see it in your JA account .

Customer:

Or .

Customer:

With out copy paste skills .

Customer:

do this now .

Customer:

open a new doc in pages , or word .

Customer :

Till the download is done?--that could be hours.

Customer:

hi ,

Customer:

Pages still bouncing around, not open yet.

Customer :

Sure.

Customer:

ok once open .

Customer:

Customer:

Then CMD C copy .

Customer:

Customer:

then go to the open pages doc .

Customer:

click it ,

Customer:

then do CMD V paste .

Customer:

then save the doc .

Customer:

ok let me know once youv done that , and we will check out the Mac HD .

Customer:

the good thing is if the Mac HD HDD hard disk drive , inside the Mac book pro is bad . we can replace it with a new SSD . but we must have a decent new time machine back up firstly .

Customer:

A new SSD will speed up the Mac book pro by x5 . With a new SSD if fitted , Booting up will take approx 12 seconds. launching apps takes 1 seconds , even after sleep.

Customer:

wake front sleep takes 2 seconds . etc .

Customer:

this is an option , if needed , so we need to find out if the Mac HD is on its way out .

Customer:

There is only one way to check , unless we guess .

Customer:

and we dont really want to guess .

Customer:

so we need to use a tool :

Customer:

this tool can tell if a drive is failing before it fails , apples disk tool cant .

Customer:

the tool has a scan function , that checks for bad blocks .

Customer:

if bad blocks are found at all , the drive needs repair , or is defective and will soon fail or get worse then fail.

Customer:

if bad blocks are found the drive should be binned and replaced .

Customer:

the software may have a trial mode , but I cant say if you can use scan while in trial .

Customer:

if you can scan use scan and tell if the drive is bad .

Customer:

but we need to wait till the iphoto job is finished to perform a scan anyhow .

Customer:

this site works better with firefox btw .

Customer:

you can download firefox here :

Customer :

I was just caught into ten minutes of scrolling--that turning disk that didn't allow me to do anything

Customer:

heres the download page :

Customer:

colour wheel spins .

Customer:

the computer is running slow .

Customer:

if you still have pages open , quit it , it will help free up ram .

Customer:

if you have itunes open , quit that also .

Customer :

The scrolling keeps coming back--everything is in slow motion.

Customer:

yes , ok , may be best to quit your safari , and come back in 20 mins .

Customer:

use Safari menu quit , rather than closing the window .

Customer:

let iphoto and iphoto manager finish the job so dont quit those . .

Customer :

Right now the computer is acting uup.

Customer :

Couldn't even type anything for 15 minutes.

Customer :

iTunes off, ipage off

Customer:

ok

Customer:

ok , try to save some ram for the job to complete .

Customer:

did you make a pages doc with the text pasted ?

Customer:

ah Bergamont , I just lit my oil burner .

Customer :

No I never got that far. When I started, everything slowed to a halt.

Customer :

There's a save and exit button at the bottom. Maybe that will do.

save and exit button at the bottom , yes that exits this page , and saves the text in your JA account questions .

Will check back in 30mins .
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Hi--not sure this is still Duke--my computer was coming to a halt. When I tried to get Word to respond, I was getting nothing. Then in record slow time (15 minutes), it gave me a dialogue box saying it wanted to update iWork. And, silly me, I hit the yes button. And that got me into a slow spin, which eventually asked me to shut Safari, which I allowed without so much as a by your leave, or any certainty that I hadn't erased all your fine help. Well, no thanks to my forethought, all the material remains. But I seem to survive as I stumble from error to error. I'm going to turn Safari and mail off again, so that there may be a chance that the download (now halfway) will finish the photo rebuild before my amp arrives in one hour. Fat chance.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
I just got message that my start up disk has no more space, and that I should quit any applications I am not using. Will do. Backup of photos is half done.
Expert:  iteachmac replied 2 years ago.
Hi this is your main issue ,

You need to make room on the Mac HD for data .

you should have at least 10GB free space .

Use get info on the Mac HD drive icon , to see space used etc .
CMD i .

Delete old files in Downloads folder etc first .

Then copy off the Mac to the G drive other files video etc to make room .
then delete the files from the mac that are now on the G drive . .

This need to be done now .

Please make sure to free up space , as it will have created the problems in the first place.

, is it possible to switch back to chat mode now your end?

The rebuild of the iphoto lib may fail if theres no space left .
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
I'm sort of back but exhausted.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
I should let it go for tonight. If I checked everything correctly, I have only 890 MB free out of 319 GB.

Also I haven't gotten a peep out of my new stereo amp--so depressing. I'll try you tomorrow.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
And I am getting messages that my start-up drive is indeed full. Time to sleep.
Expert:  iteachmac replied 2 years ago.
Hi yes , the Mac HD , the startup drive needs at least 10GB free .

At least 2 GB free for now is better than zero .

You must remove some files , to the G drive .

Once you have free space , we can continue with the iphoto rebuild . .
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
I spent the whole night working on my new Sheng Ya amp. It's 7:30 AM here. I'd better get some sleep in, but first some morning things. Then yes sleep. Work at 6PM.
Expert:  iteachmac replied 2 years ago.
amp sound good ,

Ok please let me know once you get the space cleared on the Mac HD.

We do need around 10GB free , as a minimum .

or 20% of the total space for best results . .

If your Mac HD drive is 300gb , that would be around 30GB free for best running even more free space is a bonus . .
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Hi Duke,

I'm really still in sleep mode--my earplugs are still in--but I'd feel more comfortable running through freeing up the hard drive with you. I have system folder from OS9 and applications OS9.

MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro2,2
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.33 GHz
Number of Processors: 1
Total Number of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 4 MB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed: 667 MHz
Boot ROM Version: MBP22.00A5.B07
SMC Version (system): 1.12f5
Serial Number (system): W86484T8W0H
Hardware UUID: 00000000-0000-1000-8000-0017F2C90F43
Sudden Motion Sensor:
State: Enabled

Above is some of my info.

Capacity 319 GB. Just remembered the apple-i trick. Was going to throw that useless barage above to you. Progress. Thank you.

I suppose I can't access what's in system 9 anyway. Perhaps some personal letters from departed friends, if possible.

Will that free up enough space?

I haven't put iTunes in the cloud but I have some questions about that too. I'd have to back up the library first. But I have some problems with the notion. I have 15,510 items, 92.70 GB. Sometimes I go into Get Track Names when something doesn't look right, and I'll get the message that iTunes doesn't supply info for tunes not downloaded from them, when I download pretty much everything from them. That can happen in about 40% of the cases. I have much classical and world music. I haven't bought a CD in years. Everything is from them. Why do they disown their tunes? I know I can rent out a space from iTunes for these disowned pieces. And my initial collection is from disc. But I am dismayed, also that they can hold this music ransom and change me any price for my use of it in future years.

I'm going to need more sleep. (ear plugs still in)

Let me know when the best hours (New York time) to catch you are. You're five hours ahead?

---Peter

I have my alarm see for 4--but then I'll be in race mode to get to work.
Expert:  iteachmac replied 2 years ago.
Hi , ok , the OS 9 system and data wont free up much space , so

Q

DO you use all your music on the go or just at home?

You can move your whole iTunes music folder off computer .
to an external.

And maybe just have some favorites local.

are there any other files that may be taking up space?

Check your users docs folder , with Get info .

Is there anything old that you need but not local on the Mac HD . .

Ok .

The issues with mp3 tagged etc can be resolved after .
May need to download tracks again in your account will be free . .

Yes iCloud is more expensive, but we dont need that right now if at all.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Hi Duke,
I wish I were clearer about our procedure. You are always helpful. And I'd gladly hit accept each time, because you've never failed to be helpful. Maybe you're not permitted to answer that question directly. I had no idea that the original question would involve so much more, and you've certainly been incredibly helpful. I understand we're not ready to play with the original problem until we've established a back-up for my pictures. You are certainly taking a far-sighted approach with someone who didn't even know what booting up was. And you are very generous with your time and your help.

As for clearing the hard-drive, I've been turning off the cinema display--does that help?

There are all the apps--are they apps?--like entourage, orphaned by OS 5--do I have that right? Must I just let it go, or can I save the personal emails?

I'd better run to work.

Later.
Expert:  iteachmac replied 2 years ago.
Appreciated same..

ok ,

cinema display- normally does not use or free up any space on the Mac HD , the Mac HD is a hard drive , just like the external one but internal . .

Freeing space on it , means we have to move files off , and then remove them from the main Mac HD .

We need around 10GB , and small email files even many thousands , wont get anywhere near that amount we need to free up.

Best check the MAC HD , with get info .

See what is using most space on your Mac .

From your Home folder , your user folder , Get info on each folder CMD i , Music , Pictures . movies , Documents , Applications , and print me the sizes of each folder and I can deduce the best way forward. .

Will be online for the next few hours .

Thanks.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
So the reference to my start-up being full is specifically about the hard drive alone?
Expert:  iteachmac replied 2 years ago.
Hi , yes if the mac hd , under get info is less than 1gb the message will pop up , check you mac hd size available using get info . Note: if the mac runs out of space , and is turned off while no space is free , this could lead to a non starting mac or data loss . It is a very serious issue to run so low on drive space . There really should be a brick wall at made by the osx , but it's up to the user to check their free space at this time. For example you need 8gb to burn a DVD . If there's less than that errors will occur . projects will go wrong on export , if using iMovie etc .
Expert:  iteachmac replied 2 years ago.
Also when space runs out on the mac hd , the start up drive . The workings of the osx go so slow , you may have noticed things grinding to a slow halt .

What where the sizes of your user folders within ?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Hi Teach,
I've got 2.64 GB available on the HD.
Just getting up--usually get to bed by 2am or 3.
Must take care of some morning things.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
I just got a leave feedback message from JustAnswer but when I hit the button to respond, I don't get through. I have plenty of good feedback to give.
Expert:  iteachmac replied 2 years ago.
Ok , try again , you can press accept now we can carry on working on the Issue .

2.64 GB free is about the minimum to stop the Mac crashing or worse .

Ok .

Still need to make more room , around 10GB , is good .

Rebuilding the Iphoto lib will take more space than you have on your Mac HD at the moment .

So it important to free up space.

Make sure to empty the trash , From the Finder menu , Empty trash .
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Trash has 419 items, 17.23 GB. I goes that's a good place to unload.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Cleared trash, never thought of looking there, now have 18.85 GB available on my hard drive. Must leave for work in 35 minutes. Must shower and shave. Back around 11:30 pm New York time. Most of the trash was discarded app versions, didn't notice that updates were causing such a slowdown on everything else. Everything I was checking on the hard drive was looking too minimal to bother with. Any other big discards?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Running off to work now, must dress first. Hitting accept for all the help, will see how it all proceeds, but can't do much right now.
Expert:  iteachmac replied 2 years ago.
Hi good job ,ok . Yes I got paid $14 .

Ok , You know have free space enough to sort out the iphoto Library etc , just keep an eye on the free space in future . . You may have some dupes in itunes you can clear out?

What is remaining to be done ?

I think you should check the Mac HD for errors , seeing as the Drive ran out of space .

Lets run though some basic repair checks .

Repair Mac HD , Check Permissions with the OSX Startup volume.

To check for disk errors and possibly fix issues with the Mac HD volume and other Partitions .

Please run a Mac HD drive repair ,
and Repair Permissions of the Mac HD startup volume .

Review this video to become familiar with the below procedure ..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFv3h7MVX4A&feature=related

Disk Utility

1 Start from your Mac OS X Install disc: Insert the installation disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.

2 When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
(In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)?

Important:- Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer.
If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.

3 Click the First Aid tab.

4 Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.

5 Choose your Mac OS X volume.

6 Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.

If errors are found please run the check twice .

Report any errors in displayed RED to me .

Tip:- Always start up your computer from an Install or Restore disc when using Disk Utility to verify or repair your startup volume.
**Perform Disk permission repairs while Booted to your Mac HD as normal**.

Please run repairs on all your Mac HD partitions and disks.
Choose in turn the drive name from the left hand list , and use repair .

Run repairs twice if RED errors where found , check to see if they are now cleared.

Using the Repair Privileges Utility

For Mac OS X 10.2 or later, open Disk Utility found in the Applications/Utilities folder.

Select your Mac OS X startup volume in the column on the left of the Disk Utility window, then click the First Aid tab.

Click the Repair Disk Permissions button.

Please wait while the Mac HD is checked.

If errors are found please run the check twice .

Report any errors displayed in RED to me .

Permissions Defined
Mac OS X incorporates a subsystem based on a UNIX-style operating system that uses permissions in the file system.
Every file and folder on your hard disk has an associated set of permissions that determines who can read, write to, or execute it.

Should I be inserting the Mac OS 10.5 disc, or downloading the 10.7 from online? I seem to remember that I updated from a download.
Expert:  iteachmac replied 2 years ago.
Hi , if your running lion? You'd need to burn a DVD from the download , another whole question in one .
For the moment use the 10.5 or 10.6 snow leopard better DVD, it should work ok to view if there are any issues with the mac hd.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Hi Teach,

Thanks for the kind words, and yes I sent some back.

Just getting up now. And must leave in two hours: exercise, eat, shower, shave. Some Reiki, some yoga. And allow for snow delays.

Don't know how long the disk utility takes and whether it needs my presence. Don't know when I'll be back but I have taken the night off from Carnegie.

I checked for dupes on my iTunes. The reading was that I had five days of them. But that is clearly wrong because many of the tracks with similar names had divergent timings. Especially the lectures--Swahili, early Christianity, string theory. Many of these were catalogued in a summary way, and showed up as dupes. So I think I'll have to review that closely before I delete. Not even half of the 7.59 gigabytes will go. Not all andantes are equal.

I've viewed your instructions to your Mom several times, and printed out the written part. I guess I start with the OS 10.5 original disk, and update it to my 10.7.2 later.

Sunday I have a noon call at Carnegie, but no concert for the evening. You'll probably be off.

---Peter
Expert:  iteachmac replied 2 years ago.
Hi ok ,

As you have some time .

snow delays , uhmm . none in the UK as yet .

Ok lets make a lion DVD .

This is tricky but possible .

Youd need to download lion again.

Or visit a apple store so they can burn you a copy .

To do it at home .

Heres a full guide :
http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2011/07/how-to-burn-your-own-lion-install-dvd-or-flash-drive/

But you may have to do this first to download the file from the mac app store firstly not stated in guide.

To redownload the installer on a computer running OS X Lion, press and hold the Option key while you click the Purchases tab. If the button to the right of the Install Mac OS X Lion item doesn't change to "Install" and allow you to download Lion, use Spotlight to search for "Install Mac OS X Lion" on your computer.

Ok . :)
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Should I do this instead of working from the Mac OS X (10.5) disk that I've got?
Expert:  iteachmac replied 2 years ago.
Hi you can do both if you have time .

You can use the 10.5 disk to do a quick check of the mac hd ,
but I do advise making a Lion DVD to be sure in the longrun.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
I don't know how long the check will take, so I've set up my target time for tomorrow late afternoon. There is no evening concert. But I'll check in again here certainly in the morning, maybe later tonight.
Expert:  iteachmac replied 2 years ago.
Ok where are we up to ?

Hope the weekend is going well .
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Hi Teach,
I just got up, have to leave for work in an hour, haven't proceeded with the 10.5 and the 10.7 OS discs. I do get to leave Carnegie early today, and will work on it when I get home about 4PM New York time. Nothing I can do right now.

I've been enjoying our sessions.

I'm back but if you're not there, I'll have dinner, and check into my stereo situation. I know it's 11PM where you are, you've already put in a long day, and you've given me enough info, so that I still have to catch up with you.

Hi I am about for the next 2 hours .

Thanks .
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Long day for you. I have the evening off. I'm going to intake some spirulina to see if I can spark some brain energy. You were pretty clear on the directions. Maybe I don't really need the hand-holding, just got to execute what you gave me.
Expert:  iteachmac replied 2 years ago.
brain energy , ditto that.

Yes you can skip back and use any of the ways etc to get the job done .

If you get stuck on any points , just send me a note , make sure to explain where your up to and what the problem is fully .

Please remember to press accept button on each reply if valued ,
and bonus is welcome .

Thanks, again.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
So I'm headed back to the video you sent your Mom, and then I'll let you know what damages show up from the computer's lack of start-up energy. Hopefully the spirulina will help me with my own start-up energy.

Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Somehow the first step in the Lion 7.2 download is not happening. Any suggestions for the first step?
Expert:  iteachmac replied 2 years ago.
Hi , did you read the note below the guide link. Ok , please try : Hold option-key click on the purchased button, may state installed , and you can re-download the file!Sometimes there's a nack to it .
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Hi Teach,
Just getting up.
Remember I'm the guy who didn't know what boot up meant.
So--I literally don't know where to go in order to download lion in the first place. Yes I did it because when it first came out apple was featuring it. It was in my face. I also read the MacWorld discussions. But I've forgotten how I connected with it.
I'll poke around some more. I have an idea.
Expert:  iteachmac replied 2 years ago.
Hi ,

Ok will try this my end too .

Locate osx lion download in the mac app store via the dock.

The buy button should state , download.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
OK--first time I've used the dock app button. Found Lion. Indicates that it's installed. I hit the installed button. Gave me a buy button. Hit the buy button. It wants my buy info.
Expert:  iteachmac replied 2 years ago.
Hi yes thats the button , Sorry for the delay , I got stuck In a que in the system here.

Please hold the ALT key on your Keyboard , Now press on the Purchases button while holding.

Scroll to OSX lion . Press the button to the right of the lion , May state installed .

Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Well we've got 16.74 GB free on the hard drive--changes everyday.
I never finished with the iPhoto rebuild because my computer was slowing to a crawl.
The original problem was that the iPhotos thumbnails were misaligned with the full-sized photos.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Glancing through the Burn Your Own Lion Install DVD, "right click" may give me some trouble.
Expert:  iteachmac replied 2 years ago.
Hi right click , if you only have one mouse button , Hold CMD for right mouse button .

to show a contextual menu .

Please print the section your unsure of .

Customer: replied 2 years ago.
I don't have a mouse--I've got a Mac Pro about 5 years old with just the screen at the bottom. 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. A new computer may be on the agenda.

I also don't know what the DMG is, but if, when I get to it, it's just a button that says DMG, I am quite capable of choosing it. That's in step 3 of How to Burn Your Own Lion Install DVD.
Expert:  iteachmac replied 2 years ago.
Hi , the DMG refers to the file ,

A.dmg is a tag for disk image ,

filename.dmg for instance .

If the finder , you may see the file for the lion installer , ending .dmg .

The .dmg of the lion installer can be burnt to DVD as its a disk image file .

Burning the .dmg will create a bootable OSX install DVD .

For the right mouse , on pad button , see ,

Apple menu , system preferences , track pad . and configure a right click to two finders on the pad , or right click if available . Some mac laptops do have two buttons but one is configured for use by default . Either way options for right click action can be setup here .

Or use left click holding the cmd key . i.e makes a right click .

Hope this explains that .

I played around with the track pad options in system preferences, think I'v got it.

DMG I think is clear--the end product I am looking for to burn on the dvd.

I checked the download, it was paused. I just got it going again.
Button on the download still far to the left.
I've got a key drive filled to the brim with manuscripts. Full.
I've got the GDrive mini that I was putting the photos on.
And I do think I have another small external hard drive somewhere, but it's momentarily displaced because I emptied to audio cabinet because I'm also working on that. I'm going to search now.
That would be in place of burning a disc?
I found a FireLite SmartDisk. Would that do?
Expert:  iteachmac replied 2 years ago.
it was paused. ^_^ XD.

Make the DVD version instead , You can buy a new 8gb USB key for around $25 when you have time in future . .

If you have DVDs , you may need a DL dual layer DVD 8.5GB .

See lower guide to burn DVD . .

You can also partition a part of your Mac HD , for a Lion installer .
But thats more advanced .

Yes if its a USB key drive , copy the files off of it before you use it . It will be cleared in the process . It must be 8GB or more .

is your : http://www.fixya.com/support/p248362-smartdisk_firelite_fwfl40_40_gb_hard

this , how many GB?

We can partition the drive ready if bigger than 8GB .?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Don't know if my dvds are dual layer. They're 4.7GB. 16X

Don't know if my smart disk is a key drive. Don't know what's on it. Don't see its GB capacity.

Extra problem: must run off to work in one hour. Am backstage with an amateur Japanese group with little English. Plenty of bowing, but must add extra time for communication problems. This may be our final bow for today. I noticed you got in around 7:30AM New York time and it's 4:30PM now.

Lion finally is downloaded.

Any info for me to work on my own is appreciated.

This is probably my last communication for today.

keep an eye on it . burn two copies while your at it .

Hi Teach,
I got trapped in a computer freeze. Yesterday's manuscript, already altered, wouldn't turn off, and sat in the middle of my screen, always in front. I'm still not clear on the right click.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Friend just called in extreme pain, thinks he might have reherniated a spinal disc--fell on the ice.

I did something on track pad in system preferences but no confidence I got it right and it's made my computer trackpad too sensitive for the likes of me. If I graze it, the unexpected happens. Hence the unbudging, unblinking manuscript out of nowhere in the middle of my screen.

So I'm not even at square one, at least for today's segment.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
I have--or had--a big Lion image before me, with the invitation to install. And I see I can right click on a trackpad by holding down the options key and clicking under the trackpad. So I hit the install button--seemed to be the only button to hit and started right clicking (maybe). But maybe I'm not really in the applications folder and have to find it. And I seem to have lost the lion when I stopped the download.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
So now I've taken the Lion out of the app folder onto the desktop. I've right clicked my way into a menu but show package contents is not one of the choices.
Expert:  iteachmac replied 2 years ago.
Hi , right click , Just use the left click , while holding the CMD key . show contextual menus .

I have--or had--a big Lion image before me, with the invitation to install.
Yep , slow down , don't install it , it auto deletes the Lion install after it installs , we don't want that .

grab the file from the Applications folder . File name-

VERY frustrating but I've got to start getting ready for work. Hopefully I'll be able to apply all your help when I get back. Or maybe it would be better for me to try to get to sleep before my usual 2 or 3 AM so that our timings sync better.

Tomorrow we've got Keith Jarrett.

Tonight a mix of fado singers.

There's a chance my friend will need my help tomorrow. He's in pain.

Expert:  iteachmac replied 2 years ago.
Hi , Left click while holding the CMD key .

check it is set up like this in the apple menu , system preferences . mouse , or trackpad .

You may have it set for right mouse while tapping two fingers on the track pad . If so Right mouse = tap two fingers on the track pad.

If you have a USB PC mouse , you can use right click as it has two buttons .
Left and right .

Show package content should look like this :

So--I got pretty close to having a disc of OS7. The message I'm getting is that my inserted disc may be incompatible, that I should try another brand (I tried 2), or that I should choose a slower speed. I know you mentioned the slower speed option but I'm not finding it, that is, I saw it once, and couldn't find it when I needed it.

Well I'll get to sleep around 3 if I'm lucky. I've got an appointment at 2PM. Timing is bad as usual, but I am inching forward.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Got to sleep at 4AM, woke at 7:30. Got pretty much the same result. Can't seem to find the dialogue box that allows me to choose the lower speed option. Don't know how to seek it out. I get almost to the end of the copy process--detailing all the way to the last millimeter--when my laptop spits out the disc.

I need more sleep.

Appointment at 2 PM New York time.

Carnegie a 6PM call. Keith Jarrett.

Sleep.
Expert:  iteachmac replied 2 years ago.
Hi ok , the DVD needs to be clean , and new , try a DVD-R , not rw or +r

Rest well , burn speed is just before hitting burn screen center . May Preset to maximum possible . Set to x2 or x4 ..
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Hi Teach,
I get home from work, and I think "Miles to go before I sleep," and how good I'll feel when I've broken through these techie barriers. And then four hours later, I've just inched, with no satisfying result.

The DVD is new and clean, it's a DVD-R. The burn screen center is not coming up on its own. Is there some way to seek it out? The message I get is to try a lower speed, but I don't know what speed it is going at. Also I'm not sure whether I'm burning the image I've pulled to the desk top (it calls itself an alias) or the one still at the source, the InstallESD.dmg. Alias sounds empty to me, just a pointer to something else. I think I alternate, and neither seems to work.

Must leave here at 1:45, shower, shave, eat before that. Whatever you suggest might not be applied until after. Tomorrow pretty much the same schedule, dentist appointment at 2PM.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

broken through these techie barriers. indeed .

Ok alias is not the file you need , you need to copy out of the installer to your G drive ,
within the package , the file :

InstallESD.dmg

and use this file to burn .

Press burn , choose the InstallESD.dmg ,

The Panel will open like this , setup spped once a DVD is inserted .

Proceed with the setup and burn .

Copy the file : InstallESD.dmg to the Gdrive . Saving space on the Mac HD.

Copy both the InstallESD.dmg from with the package , & OSX Lion installer to the Gdrive , once stored on the Gdrive you can free up the space on the Mac HD by trashing those files . Remember to Empty trash.

But otherwise I can't get the dialogue box that gives me choice of speed download.

Yes burn speed--I'm not getting a dialogue box to make a choice. Then when the burn failure box shows up it tells me to lower the burn speed. But I can't find a way to do it.

You change burn speed just before burning ,

Just after inserting a DVD , the panel is displayed .

What's osx version are you running ? About this mac , from the apple menu.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
But that choice only showed up the first time I tried to copy the to the disc, and that time I wasn't sure which one to pick. I think the failure dialogue box is asking me to choose the lowest number.

I'm running 10.7.2. The change orphaned a number of programs.

Ok we can burn a disk image using more than one tool ,

Disk utility is just one of those .

Another is Roxio toast .

Do you have this software? , its the burning software for mac ,
Been around years , updated and supported well .

I recommend it .

Perhaps we can use toast to make the burn instead . Or we can try with a new account on your osx that will be defaulted .
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
I don't seem to have Roxio.

I do have Time Capsule, and there's a chance I set it up correctly. I also have that 500GB external hard drive --the Mini G drive.

I found that if I go far back into the set-up for the InstallESD I will get the dialogue box to change the copy speed. The computer was suggesting I make the copy speed lower. So I went from 2X to !X. Disc ejected anyway.

14GB on the hard drive today. Must be at Carnegie at 4 today Backstage with XXXXX XXXXXier (Hilliard Ensemble and Theater of Voices with David Lang, doing his Little Match Girl Passion. Don't know if you know them. Should be interesting.

Despairing on the computer front. Losing track. Tomorrow I'm busy from 10AM to midnight. But maybe Time Capsule has already taken care of everything.

I'm on the verge of getting a new computer. A techie friend suggested I trust the cloud with my music and photos. iTunes disowns most of what I download from it. Don't know why--mainly the classical and world music. Must start getting ready for Carnegie.

I hear that if you get a new computer you just transfer the problems to it. I was thinking of getting the one on one program if apple still offers it, so I can have someone to work me through all the transfer problems. By implication that would mean sorting out my current situation.

I'm thinking of one of the macbook pros, pretty much what I've got now. Mine is 4 or 5 years old, 15 inch. I've got a cinema display, 30 inches, and I've got an iPad for mobility, so size is not crucial from that point of view. I was wondering whether to get the 13, 15, or 17 inch version. I would probably max the interior capacity of whichever I got. 33GB photos. 93G music. And growing. Manuscripts don't require much space. Any recommendations?

Just fumbling around,

Peter

Must leave for work in an hour and a half.

Id keep using your current Mac , But upgrade the HDD to SSD .
and off load all your libraries , For music and photos to an external HDD.
That is also backed up .

Also upgrade the Ram to Max .

You get a good few years more use out of it , and speed up the Mac by at least 4x

boot up in 12 seconds , battery life extended by around x2 or more ,
sound attractive .

See :

http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/internal_storage/Mercury_Extreme_SSD_Sandforce/Solid_State_Pro/

You would need a min of 240GB that is only $355.
Apps such as Safari would load in about one bounce of the dock.
Wake from sleep 2 seconds .

How many bounces does it take to load Safari at the moment? or that plus wake from sleep .

Also , yes the new MBP 17 is a decent tool with the upgraded CPU.

Whats your Mac ID ?

Don't know what the sata connection is.

Computer frustration is like nothing else in my life. I've been going to the Mac genius bar for years. They help even though I'm out of warranty. They explain nothing, but they fix things, which is one of the reasons working with you has been good. I'm learning more--though it scarcely seems so. Before the genius bar, I would call in to support. The fact that there's a live voice there makes a big difference, because we don't stay at the same point for days. That's all my fault, my fog, and I've got a life and a job on this side, and a suicidal friend in the background. Haven't been able to contact him the last few days. That's what I really want to fix right now.

Do I sound frustrated?
Expert:  iteachmac replied 2 years ago.
H i, no problem deal with the important things in life first .

Computers can wait .

Apple store or Genius bar can help you burn a lion dvd instore if you arrange a meet in future .

Or we can work through it , perhaps the best way is forget DVD and get your self a 8gb usb memory stick , and then we can try making a usb installer.

Order one of these when you have a moment , or get from local goods store .

Friend seems better. Revitalized, loving, grateful--he's entered a new world.

He's the father of my goddaughter. We did a book together, aphoristic satire on American attitudes toward celebrities, and the resulting pressures on celebrity life. He had cut off his beloved daughter and his very ill father. He's a very up and down guy, also smart and funny. Then slipped on the ice, right after fighting with everyone, and reherniated his spinal disk, with excruciating pain. Was smiling at work this afternoon, a new Joe. Says he's been talking to his daughter now daily, and will call his parents next week.

Would my external hard drive work? Or the Time Capsule? Or do you think it would be better to get something small and dedicated just to recording the hard drive?-- (that's what I want to copy, right?) And 8gb would cover that?

I know--you're asleep. And I will be when you answer this.

Hi , glad things are working out .

8gb USB stick is just to create burn a osx install. Instead of using DVD .
DVD is problematic , I have made some tests this end with mixed results .

We make it so the installer is on a 8gb USB stick . A 4gb USB is just too small Iv tested .

the install disk or DVD or ram stick is used to test , repair , or install mac osx lion .
Apple store can provide these also .

At the moment we don't have a lion install we can use .
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Hi Teach,
First I want to thank you for all your help--it really was a teaching experience. But the truth is I'm pretty hopeless with all this. There's a techie friend here who really would love to show me how to do all it. And somehow I never seem to be out of warranty with Apple. They only charge me for new parts. In the case of the iPad, they gave me a new pad when the battery died on me too quickly. This computer is acting strangely in a number of ways. For example, when I type sometimes it won't print out the next letter right away, with 14.93 GB available (just checked, thank you). If I get a new computer, then I can opt for their one-on-one program. They can help me with the transfer, and unknot some of the problems here in doing so. If I'm confused they can address that instantly. They're right by my gym, one of the less crowded apple stores, on 14th Street, a twenty minute walk away, and I'd get to the gym more. A writing friend said she used her one-on-one to set up a web site, that she'd go once a week. You can imagine my attempts in that direction. Aesthetics excellent--techie stuff zero. In the meantime, I sent my latest unpublished novel to a writer friend who used to live across the street, and is now back in Sweden in the woods. I'm a character in her latest novel, but it's in Swedish, so I may never read it. Well she gave me a very helpful and encouraging editorial review--came in last night's e-mail: my attention has to be there. You must be quite frustrated with our exchange, though frustration may be part of the job, the cart going over and over the same muddy groove. I provide the mud. So thanks again. In case anyone asks, I'll give you the splendid review you deserve.

A new computer would be much faster than the current spec , and sort out many of the problems , plus you will get a new warranty and some peace of mind :)

If you have the money , get the new machine its allot less hassle.
Time is the important factor to many folks , So like you building my own PCs is now not an option as it takes to much time , Upgrading though is a must and I do this periodically to avoid HD failures , approx every 3 to 4 years for those. .
Working on my next sound design project Ran , a classic Japanese film "Credits remix" , soon now for youtube.

Have you tried installing the combo update for lion yet ? can provide link ,
now you have space its possible to do this .
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
I'd love to find your design project Ran on youtube when it arrives.

What is the combo update? I get regular updates from them. Is it beyond those? I guess that would be installed in a new computer.

If I put my iTunes in the cloud, does that mean I remove it from my mac? That's 93 GB. Or is there a choice there, and is doing so not advisable? Assuming a back-up to my miniG external hd. And I'm still not clear whether all my music and all my photos are already on my TimeCapsule, always assuming I set it up correctly. Maybe I could get in there to the point before the thumbnails separated from the full photos (ouch!).

So many questions, so little time.

Combo update , for your current mac .

down load find the installer , run it and install . **

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1459

It replaces some of the system so its fixes some issues even if already running 10.7.2

10.7.3 should be out soon also .

iTunes in the cloud , paid hosting of your songs . Video explains.

I'm still not clear whether all my music and all my photos are already on my TimeCapsule, OK , yes we can work on this one .

Please install the ** , and report anything not working after , see if this gets rid of any current problems ..

Thanks.

How are things progressing?

I didn't go near any of the problems today.

Thanks for the youtube clip. Do you speak and write Japanese?

Here's an exchange clip. It's young adult fiction, first words of a novel.

Helping Heaven

PART ONE

1.

When Jane’s father died, everyone wanted to help. They would begin by saying he was in Heaven. What do you tell a twelve year old? She would save them the trouble. She knew she had been his Heaven. Where were they sending him?

After the funeral service, well-wishers gathered together in the sunny backyard her father had reclaimed from the abandoned trolley, Sea Gate’s own. The single car, with woven straw seats, set in steel and white porcelain, had been mesmerizingly slow. It was now extinct. The pre-ordained route had kept it to the sandy expanse, lengthwise, at the center of the swollen block. The houses all faced away from the once present, now absent trolley, whose earthly trajectory had brought people, never many, to and from the quiet, now quieter, tip of the beachless side of the Coney Island peninsula. There the Atlantic Ocean laid the Hudson and East Rivers to rest in the sleepy backwaters of Gravesend Bay. Somewhere in the community’s unconscious memory, mythologically tingeing its sandy grounds, hovered perhaps a muted clang, now scarcely a ding.

Falling off my feet. Time to sleep.

Hi , no I don't , would be impressive if I did.

I practiced some shotokan for a while, 2years when there seemed to be more time in life .

These things are of life and a way to spend it . I respect that .
And understand it would take your life to be true in those arts.

Is this your work?

Just waking up. Philip Glass celebrating his 75th birthday at Carnegie last night.

Yes that's the beginning of a young adult novel of mine. I like that age group because everything is still possible. Not that that ever stops. I actually chose the age group posthumously, posthumously to the creation of the novel. You've got to choose a market, I'm told. And the heroine is 12. She's got to save her mom, the school counselor from dead-end despair. So maybe the book is most empowering to young adults. Then that's where it should go.

Two unpublished novels, and an aphoristic satire on American attitudes toward celebrities. The latter earned me a god-daughter from my co-author but no publication yet. I worked with Al Pacino six days a week for a year when I managed a famous New York theater, 298 seats. Pacino was doing David Mamet's American Buffalo. I was there fourteen years. It's an apartment house now. With a small marquee.

I'm probably moving in the direction of a new computer.

I haven't applied your latest suggestions yet.

I had to watch and return a Bridesmaids video to an actors-agent friend yesterday. First time I was in his office since his partner suddenly died last month. That was a very solid, juicy personality just plucked out of the picture. I've been dazed since my visit.

Oculist appointment in less than one and a half hours.

I'd better race.

I'm probably moving in the direction of a new computer. Dont think twice.

Philip Glass celebrating his 75th birthday at Carnegie , Amazing .
I read he has recorded many of his works at Carnegie.

Just previewed some of the "Mastered for itunes" stated , Glass Works , Forgive the pun , in itunes store , and heard clicks on the 3rd movement , not convinced of the mastering for itunes. No doubt apple shoddy previews .

Perhaps a very low bit rate or some DC offset in the digital..
Im not being picky . I respect Philip Glass.

Doh. Suddenly we all got old..

Pacino depth + character .
Carlito's Way , in my top 10.
Only seen Hofmans performance :(

Yes that's the beginning of a young adult novel of mine.
Im missing something why the death? a flood , trolley / tram?

What do you tell a twelve year old?
We are all made of stars:) at some point we will reunite and be as one again.
Perhaps the cotton and needle will sew something together once more in time.

Im still building a CV as you can see after 25 years of audio vandalism . .
My main income is Electrical sparks , some Studio work - programming synth's yes very 70's + teaching etc. Where do I post it lol?

Scott is my favorite director, he seems to pick the right people , cant wait for next months revisit . .

I learn some basics , how to publish for the app store and make simple books and comics just "recently". Its less expensive than to publish to ibooks..as + less cut for apple. My plan C .

Private chit chat on the JA site may be looked down upon so will keep this brief ,

What do you make of this ?

The Swimming Pool

It is like any other water. It has the same properties. Blue in the mind but so so clear when you reach it. A template for the blank part of you.

Dip in and you can feel it engulfing.; swallowing the pores like it was possessed. It shapes itself around you – this external parasite - and yet I long for it. Not the initial chill of the air that keeps it nor the siren’s embrace. It’s the nullity of it that draws me here.

There is no smell in remembrance. They say there is but there is no perfume or powder or sweat: even the chemicals that balm this place are indistinct. No, the smell of this pool is like any other. It is a blanking of history- a sanitisation of things past. Every pool smells the same.

And yet again, i am here. ..

It took two weeks to cry for them, and even then it felt false. As if some kernel of grief tapped on my conscience and insisted upon tears.

There was no relief from it. I conjured up the images of life – of Scully and Tom. But they were the shape to everything. Without them the tears fall flat, they splat splat splat away; a limitless supply but not even enough to fill a cup.

It seems there is no pattern to grief. It just sits and cankers – it is an ambush from no known enemy. It waits forever for the slightest whiff.

I know it was a Tuesday – am sure of it. It’s written here to remind me. Just a couple of sheets of paper. One certificate for each – like an award for living. It’s strange that I cannot separate them – I have had to copy and copy, have had to reiterate them going again and again. Individually I have placed them into machines – refashioned their going for every department that needs to know they are gone. But they still live together with me. I do not file them separately.

Hi ,
Ok the new Combo updater is just out . 10.7.3 linked .

Includes many bug fixes .
So disregard the 10.7.2 combo , as posted before . .

Please use this updater , rather than the built in software update .

You've got a real poetry there, and by real I mean you're finding it in the structure of reality, in the science or metaphysics of perception.

What do you tell a twelve year old?
We are all made of stars:) at some point we will reunite and be as one again.
Perhaps the cotton and needle will sew something together once more in time.

That's really good. Weaving in and out of time. I'm going to do that download of 10.7.3 now.

Moving toward sleep.

I put in 10.7.3. Did nothing else for my computer.

If your ever in New York, I live at the Larchmont Hotel--great location, 11th Street near 5th Avenue--excellent prices.

What I sent you was the beginning of a novel.

Whats the most important / remaining issue for you right now?

beginning of a novel.

Yes sounds interesting.
Inform me if your publish, would be good.

I will note that down , thanks.

Have a great weekend from tomorrow.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Most important issue: clearing up my brain.

I haven't applied your last two days suggestions, except for the download of OS X 10.7.3. I guess I should work on that. Can't quite face it.

Saturday I'm with a friend all day. No evening concert scheduled.

Sunday just a matinee.

Monday and Tuesday, Jay Z with special guests. Not clear yet whether I'm working backstage or front of the house main floor--depends on the number of special guests.

Moving in the direction of a new computer. Just spacing my expenditures.

I think you're off for the weekend. Have an excellent one.

You've given me enough to apply if I can face it.
