Cannot Send Emails from Gmail Account. Need Help with Settings

I can receive email with my gmail account but cannot send. I've messed up the settings somehow and don't know how to fix:( Please help!

Are you using Apple Mail application ?

We can verify the settings of Gmail in your Mail.

  1. Open Mail and choose Preferences from the Mail menu.
  2. Click Accounts in the Preferences window.
  3. Select (highlight) your account on the left side of the window
  4. Click the Account Information pane.
  5. Make sure the Incoming Mail Server is set to
  6. From the "Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)" pop-up menu, choose Edit SMTP Server list.
  7. Click on Advanced tab.
  8. Change the Outgoing server to
  9. Change the port to 587
  10. Close it.
  11. Restart Mail and try to send again.

Let me know if that didn't worked...Only click Accept after we solved the problem.

gives me an error message saying, "cannot send message using the server gmail"

Click on Window menu and select Connection Doctor. Run it and let me know the results/errors

could it be my gmail account settings?
Yeah, i think so. In your Mail, click on Mail and select Preferences. In there, delete the Gmail account from there. Then restart Mail and add it back. Does that worked ?

My account settings were messed up in gmail and had to reset before I could add the account back.
