I am Vinod. I will try my best to help you resolve this issue.

Sorry to hear that you lost all your contact...:(

The chances of recovery is less, but let's try the maximum ways possible.

Did you save your contacts to icloud when you updated the iphone/ipad to iOS 5?

Thank You

Did not save anywhere, was about to but my iTunes password XXXXX boyfriend's and is still under his name and his name is XXXXX XXXXX account which I do not want because his name shows up and we broke up so it's not appropriate but notwithstanding nothing was backed up p,us it seems like it suddenly disappeared....

Let's try this. Open itunes in the computer and connect the ipad. Now, your ipad will be displayed to the left side of the itunes, below "devices". Just right click on it and click on "restore from backup".

If you have any older date listed there, just select that. Let me know whether this bring back all your contacts.

no problem...take your time.

If you try a "restore from backup" on the ipad, and if you have an older backup saved in the computer, you will be able to sync them back.

To check whether you have an older backup, open itunes in the computer. Then click on Edit menu at the top (where it shows file, edit, view, controls, etc). Click on Edit > Preferences > Devices tab. There you will find your iphone's and ipad's last backup date. Is that an older date before the update?
