Try resetting the PRAM.

1. Shut down the computer.
2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need them in step 4.
3. Turn on the computer.
4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts.
6. Release the keys.

Mike,

This did not work. I followed directions and it would cycle to almost start and fall back. I let it cycle several times (5) before releasing keys. It started but no charging.

Ok it looks like you already did what I was going to suggest so I would say if you try a different power adapter and the same thing happens the battery is bad. You could try that at the Apple store.
