Hello Madeline, my name is Dan.
I will do my best to help you, the only stupid question is the unasked one.

Is this the Mail app in the dock?
Which version of OS X do you have?
Customer: replied 5 years ago.
no, not the mail app on the dock OSX 10.6.8. I can backspace on this reply or on text edit but not on composing something for an email through my cable provider which is charter communications.
Expert:  Daniel replied 5 years ago.
So you do email through your browser on Charter's server and software.
The problem isn't with your Mac, it is with them.
I suggest two things.
One, emulate Firefox in Safari. This is done by turning on the Develop menu in Safari preferences.

That will emulate Firefox and give the same functionality.

Or download and try the real Firefox, it may be that their server software doesn't like Safari at all.

But the problem is with them not you.
Does that help?
