Greetings,I am very sorry to hear about your problem. First off, you need to change your password XXXXX soon as possible.
As far as locating the person who did this, it may be possible if a person actually did it.
Often times, no "person" did this; rather it was a piece of spyware or virus that did it without any human intervention.
I will walk you through the steps required to find this out though.
Please, let me know when you are ready to begin.
I am here.
Are you there?
When did this problem occur approximately?
From my past experiences, I would think that this is related to a virus or spyware program.
Why do you think that a specific person did this?
Ok, were the emails related to trying to get your friends to send money, go to websites and pay for something, etc?
So, you are pretty sure that an actual human was behind this and not a virus?
Has the person in question ever had access to your computer?
I am confused.
The problem was that some of your personal emails were actually forwarded to other people in your contact list?
yes, and now i'm typing on my comp instead of my phone
they were sent to two addresses for sure
Ok, Gmail keeps track of the last 10 IP addresses that have accessed your account.
You can check this by logging into your Gmail account and clicking the "Details" link on the bottom of the initial page.
If you locate the IP address in question, you can trace that to a specific person sometimes.
Being that it happened a couple months ago, you may be out of luck because it may not go back that far.
yeah, it doesn't look like that will help
One moment, please
the same ip address has sent the last 10
What is possible is you can open the forwarded messages on your friends' computers and look at the email header.
The email header will contain the source IP address of the computer that sent it.
Do you know which email service is used by them?
ive got some old emails, i can check
Your emails will not help.
You need to look up the header on the emails that were actually forwarded
i mean ones he sent me
no, i freaked out and started deleting
Example: If your friend was sent a forward, you must open the email that was forwarded in their inbox and view it's header.
It doesn't matter if you deleted your emails on your account.
You need the emails in your friends' accounts that they received.
Does that make sense?
ok, i gottcha
to see what it looked like leaving my comp?
I don't think the anti virus actually removed the prob
No. When you send an email, your IP address, the email server's IP address, etc are recorded in the actual email. If you can find that email and it's header, you can find out what the source IP address was and therefore, trace it back to a particular person.
Do you think that they put a trojan virus on your Mac?
i do understand
i warned you that i was dumb! has
;) You do not sound dumb at all
on a comp i am
It sounds like you have ran the antivirus and therefore removed the Virus if there ever was one.
on my pc, i've had virus that hid
in the start up
could this be hiding on my mac?
Yes, I am very familiar with viruses.
It is doubtful that it is hiding after running those two antiviruses.
i ran them in safe mode, was that correct?
How do you want to continue with this? Are you just wanting to find out who did this for your own sake or do you want to press charges against this person?
That is correct.
if i could find out who did this, i would sue them. they have done direct damage to my business
i'll take the embarrassment
literally associatitions cancelled, i just didn't know why
Once you get one of the forwarded emails, look at the email header and see if it contains the source IP address. When you bring this case to a lawyer, she or he will ask for the forwarded emails and continue from there.
They will then use the source IP addresses and the time at which the emails were sent to triangulate the location and identity of the person.
ok, so nobody has control of my comp?
if i change my gmail password, i'm good to go?
It is highly unlikely that anyone has control voer your computer.
Yes, changing your email is never a bad idea.
so they can't get passwords etc?
i think the latest problem happened last friday, i sent an email to a customer......i'm worried
I cannot answer that question truthfully, because many variables must be taken into consideration.
most likely then?
My opinion is that your computer was never 'controlled' by the person in question.
just my email account?
And that can be done in a multitude of ways.
Virus, spyware, script, etc.
well, i've taken steps..........now
However, those are all temporary ways to gain access. If you have removed the virus(es) then you are good.
to much false mac security
If I were in your position, I would feel safe that my information is secure now after doing all of that.
i appreciate your help, its been freaking me out
Agreed. Mac computers are "more" secure, but by all means not "totally" secure.
You are very welcome.
the email on last friday, it should have been ok then?
What email on last friday?
with the old passwork?
Change your password XXXXX you will be good to go.
ok, but i'm really worried about the one i sent on friday
Then one you sent? Why is that?
it would be a huge loss if it got sent with all the other stuff
if the old embarasssing emails were attached to my email on friday, i just lost over $100,000
Ok, I am starting to understand the magnitude of this problem.
yeah, it could crash my company, a small one, but it's how i live
I suggest that you turn your computers off, go to a different computer, change your password, then bring both of the computers to a lawyer's office and continue there.
so, is my pc ok to use?
The possibility that there are still problems on the computer are very low, but very low * 100,000 equates to a number that is not so low, if you get my drift.
ok, well, crap
There is absolutely no way for me to know if it is ok.
i'll change passwords and run all my anti virus
Truthfully, you are probably safe using the computers; however, if you continue to use them now, you may remove evidence that the lawyer(s) may want access to if you do bring this to court.
i'm calling somebody tomorrow
thanks for your help
