Using a new Mac 2011 version of Excel, I want to sort a date

Customer Question

Using a new Mac 2011 version of Excel, I want to sort a date column. An error message appears "This operation requires the merged cells to be identically sized."

I have not merged cells, that I'm aware of. I tried to copy the data and paste it into a new workbook, but still the same error message. I have sorted this format in Excel before, with no problem.

How do I get the data to sort?

Hi,

Select the range of data that your want to sort (or the columns), then from the menu click Format > Cells > Alignment tab, then completely uncheck the box 'Merge cells'. Click OK

You should be able to sort now

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions, and thank you for clicking Accept if you are satisfied with the answer

I went to Format> Cells> Alignment tab and found the "Merge cells" box with a dash sign, not checked. I clicked on it to remove the dash and tried to sort the workbook. No luck. The cell merge error message still appears, and I can not sort.

What do you suggest next?

No you need to click on it until the box is completely blank.

Please select the range again then go to the alignment tab and keep clicking on the box until it is completely blank

I did click on the Merge Cells box until it was blank. I did so again, and I still get the error message.
