I created a website in iweb for a non-profit organization.

This answer was rated:

I created a website in iweb for a non-profit organization. I made a slideshow in keynote and put it in iweb via html snippet. It works great through quicktime. However, the foundation needs me to put the video in a flash. I purchased Doremisoft convertor software for $49.00 and thought everything would be just fine. It looks like I was able to convert my slideshow with the software, (I now have a file Teal Tea Stories Slide Show(0).swf) but I just can't seem to get the coding right for the html snippet. I am not using mobileme and all the tutorials give instruction for linking to the idisk, but I am publishing to a local folder. I don't know coding so I need to know the exact information to put into the coding. I have spent the last two weeks trying to figure this out. Can you help me get this to work or is it impossible. This is my last hope. -Dawn

Mac Extraordinaire :

Greetings,

I will be here once you are ready to begin.

Customer:

Please let me know when you are back. Thank you!

Mac Extraordinaire :

Hello

Mac Extraordinaire :

What issues are you having with the SWF file?

Customer:

I am not sure how to place it into an html snippet in my iwebpage. I am using a local folder

Mac Extraordinaire :

You would use the following code to simply insert the SWF video file:

<EMBED SRC="HTTP://YOURWEBSITE.COM/NAMEofFILE.SWF">

Mac Extraordinaire :

It is simple as that. The swf file is treated just like any other media object (image, video, etc).

Customer:

Do I only need that one line of script?

Mac Extraordinaire :

That is correct

Mac Extraordinaire :

do you already have the object online somewhere? or the page?

Mac Extraordinaire :

<embed src="http://YourDomainName.com/yourFolderHere/Teal Tea Stories Slide Show(0).swf">

Mac Extraordinaire :

May I be of any further assistance today?

Customer:

yes. I guess I should try it now. I have been trying to solve this for about 2 weeks. All the forums suggest this long script and for me to replace a couple of lines with my url.

Mac Extraordinaire :

You may click the Accept button now and leave any feedback for me that you feel is appropriate.

You may bookmark the following link: http://theextraordinaire.com
----> In the future, if you have a question and would prefer to work with me, please visit that site and ask your questions there.

Customer:

I don't have the object on the live page, because I can't get it to work. I have it running in quicktime live, but the foundation needs it in flash.

Mac Extraordinaire :

Ok

Customer:

I tried pasting <EMBED SRC="HTTP://www.tealtea.com/Teal Tea Stories Slide Show.swf"> into the snippet and all I got was a white box

Mac Extraordinaire :

One moment, please.

Mac Extraordinaire :

That swf file does not exist.

Mac Extraordinaire :

Did you already copy it to your server?

Customer:

I guess not. I am not using mobileme so how would I do that? When I am finished making changes to my webpages I publish to ftp server

Mac Extraordinaire :

You will have to copy the swf file to the server.

Customer:

sorry for the stupid question, but how do I do that. The website sends everything to the ftp server when I hit upload. Do I try uploading the website, or is there some other way to send just the swf file to the server?

Mac Extraordinaire :

No such thing as a stupid question :)

Yes, please upload the website.

Customer:

okay. well. it is only showing a white box where I placed the snippet with the file code.

Mac Extraordinaire :

Yes, that is because you are pointing it to a swf file on the internet that has not been copied there, yet.

Mac Extraordinaire :

Please, upload the site.

Customer:

I have uploaded it to the local folder and then to the ftp server. It is still a white box.

Customer:

I uploaded the whole website via local folder and ftp server. Do I need to place that swf file with my hositing site somehow?

Mac Extraordinaire :

The swf file just needs to be located on your hosting site somewhere

Mac Extraordinaire :

The swf file is not at the following location: HTTP://www.tealtea.com/Teal Tea Stories Slide Show.swf

Mac Extraordinaire :

Were you able to copy it?

Customer:

If I copy it, where do I place it? Do I log onto my hosting site which is 1&1?

Mac Extraordinaire :

Yes, you can do that. All you have to do is copy it to any location on your site and know where it is located.

Customer:

I have logged onto 1&1, where would be the best place to upload or place it?

Mac Extraordinaire :

It truly does not matter which folder you copy it to.

Mac Extraordinaire :

You just need to know in which folder it is located.

Customer:

I had to log back on under firefox.

Mac Extraordinaire :

Ok

Customer:

Okay I went under webspace & access, webspace explorer, teal tea should I hit upload or will that effect the site or should I just try too copy and paste

Mac Extraordinaire :

You can just copy and paste that one SWF file

Customer:

I doesn't seem to want me to copy. I can't open the file, it says there is no application set to open the document

Mac Extraordinaire :

Ok, you do not need to open the file.

Mac Extraordinaire :

Please, just copy it to the site.

Customer:

how do I copy it? i hit command c and then in my hosting site i try Command P under the website folder it does nothing.

Mac Extraordinaire :

Command V is to is for pasting.

Customer:

I'm sorry I meant command V

Mac Extraordinaire :

Right click the file and choose COPY. Right click the website folder area and choose PASTE

Customer:

I dropped it into my website folder that goes over to 1 and 1 I will try to upload the site again to see if that makes a difference

Mac Extraordinaire :

When you dropped it into the website folder, did it copy?

Customer:

it didn't work. and it looks like it didn't copy it moved it.

Customer:

I made a copy to put back on my hard drive

Mac Extraordinaire :

I am not familiar with 1&1 hosting.

Mac Extraordinaire :

You have changed that line of code correct? Please, upload the site to the website as you normally do.

Customer:

I changed it in the beginning of our session. I will upload the site again.

Mac Extraordinaire :

Thank you

Customer:

still just a white box.

Mac Extraordinaire :

Ok, it did upload?

Mac Extraordinaire :

The http://www.tealtea.com/Teal%20Tea%20Stories%20Slide%20Show.swf file still does not exist.

Mac Extraordinaire :

This is a simple two step process.

1) Add the line of code I gave you
2) Copy the SWF file and the new html page to the server

Customer:

<EMBED SRC="HTTP://YOURWEBSITE.COM/NAMEofFILE.SWF"> this is the code you gave me.

Mac Extraordinaire :

That is the example code.

Mac Extraordinaire :

You replace the http://xxxx...xxxx./xxx.swf" file with your filename.

Customer:

<EMBED SRC="HTTP://tealtea.com/Teal Tea Stories Slide Show.swf"> does this look right. Is it case sensitive?

Mac Extraordinaire :

the Command is not case sensitive

Customer:

<EMBED SRC="HTTP://www.tealtea.com/Teal Tea Stories Slide Show.swf"> this is what I currently have in the snippet

Mac Extraordinaire :

Ok

Mac Extraordinaire :

You must copy the SWF file to the server before it will work.

Customer:

by server are you meaning my hosting company?

Mac Extraordinaire :

Yes

Mac Extraordinaire :

I assume you are using Mac Os X, correct?

Customer:

Do you think uploading only the swf file to my hosting company should work. Yes Mac OsX

Mac Extraordinaire :

Yes, please upload the Swf file.

Customer:

I would think it would upload when I publish the page. It updates all my changes every time I publish a page. I haven't had to upload anything to their site since the first day I published the site

Mac Extraordinaire :

ok

Mac Extraordinaire :

Then you must use their software to "insert" the Swf.

Customer:

the swf file is in the teal tea foundation folder on the hosting site

Mac Extraordinaire :

Ok

Mac Extraordinaire :

Which folder?

Mac Extraordinaire :

Link please

Customer:

https://admin.1and1.com/xml/config/WebspaceExplorer;jsessionid=EE10AABCF5B0E9B00447E94247879124.TC66b?__frame=_top&__lf=WebspaceExplorer_Flow

Customer:

does that help?

Mac Extraordinaire :

No

Mac Extraordinaire :

You said that the swf file is in the teal tea foundation folder. Is that folder online?

Mac Extraordinaire :

What is the address? (example: http://tealtea.com/foldersomething/*****.swf

Customer:

I'm sorry. I put it in the Administration folder under web space & access webspace explorer, teal tea, teal tea foundation folder. It is in the folder with with all the html files and folders

Mac Extraordinaire :

ok

Mac Extraordinaire :

Please, give me that folder.

Mac Extraordinaire :

What is the name of the foldrer?

Mac Extraordinaire :

*folder

Mac Extraordinaire :

Ok

Mac Extraordinaire :

I found it

Mac Extraordinaire :

Ok, i found it, but it is not fully there.

Mac Extraordinaire :

it is only about 64 kilobytes in size.

Customer:

i am so lost right now

Mac Extraordinaire :

Please, do not be. All we must do is copy one file to the server.

Customer:

i haven't been able to figure out how to

Mac Extraordinaire :

In the 1&1 Webspace explorer, all you must do is copy that file from your computer to the server.

Customer:

you want me to copy a file FROM the 1&1 webspace explorer?

Customer:

Do I click on the swf file and click download?

Mac Extraordinaire :

I do not understand.

Mac Extraordinaire :

All you must do is copy FROM the computer, TO the server.

Mac Extraordinaire :

Copy that one SWF file and we will be done.

Customer:

I thought that's what I already did.

Mac Extraordinaire :

In the webspace explorer, do you see the copy button? Copy from computer to webserver.

Mac Extraordinaire :

Ok

Mac Extraordinaire :

How big is the swf file?

Customer:

I see the copy button!!! The file size is 61911

Mac Extraordinaire :

Ok

Mac Extraordinaire :

That is a problem.

Mac Extraordinaire :

The file size should be a bit larger.

Customer:

If I click on the copy button it is selecting the entire website. shouldn't it just be the one file? If I double click the one swf file there is an option to download

Mac Extraordinaire :

The original movie is larger than 7,000,000.

The swf file should be a lot larger than 61911

Mac Extraordinaire :

I am able to see the swf file that is currently on the site.

Mac Extraordinaire :

But there is nothing "in" the swf file. Are you able to open that SWF file on your Mac?

Customer:

no

Mac Extraordinaire :

If you cannot open on your mac, then it will not be 'openable' anywhere.

Mac Extraordinaire :

There was a problem when it was converted from the MOV file to the SWF file

Customer:

The software I used said that it was complete. I just assumed it was fine since I had nothing to compare it to

Mac Extraordinaire :

That is understandable.

Mac Extraordinaire :

Please, convert the MOV file once more.

Customer:

it says there is no application set to open the document

Mac Extraordinaire :

Which document?

Customer:

i have the software open to convert the current video settings are: width 640 height 480 encoder FLV Video Bitrate 512 kbps frame rate fps

Mac Extraordinaire :

Ok. What other encoder options do you have? Other than FLV?

Mac Extraordinaire :

Do you have a SWF option?

Customer:

the next screen says generate FLV, Generate SWF, embed the video in SWF and play in timeline, Play the created external FLV file progressively, generate HTML, generate thumbnail. ( all are checked except for embed teh video in SWF and play in timeline.

Mac Extraordinaire :

Ok

Mac Extraordinaire :

Choose the GENERATE SWF option

Customer:

should I deselect generate FLV, deselect generate HTML, deselect generate thumbnail

Customer:

should I select embed the video in swf and play in timeline rather than selecting play the created external FLV file progressively?

Mac Extraordinaire :

Deselect generate flv, generate html, & thumbnail.

Select embed the video in swf

Customer:

okay. shall I convert now?

Mac Extraordinaire :

Yes, please

Customer:

it says all conversion tasks have finished

Mac Extraordinaire :

Ok

Mac Extraordinaire :

How big is the resulting SWF file?

Customer:

it says 5.3 MB and it says that I can't open it

Customer:

It says to search for an application that can open this file

Customer:

Is this hopeless?

Mac Extraordinaire :

Ok

Mac Extraordinaire :

That is better

Mac Extraordinaire :

5.3 MB is what I was looking for.

Mac Extraordinaire :

Please, upload that new swf file to your hosting site.

Mac Extraordinaire :

We are almost done here.

Customer:

I have to pick up my 4 children from school. I will be back in about 1/2 hour. How do I continue this session?

Mac Extraordinaire :

You can log back into the site and pull up this chat session.

Mac Extraordinaire :

You may click Accept now or later.

Customer:

okay. talk to you soon

Mac Extraordinaire :

Thank you

Customer:

I'm back

Mac Extraordinaire :

Hello

Mac Extraordinaire :

Ok

Mac Extraordinaire :

Have you uploaded the new 5.3MB swf file to the webserver?

Customer:

I'm working on it, it seems to be running slow

Mac Extraordinaire :

Ok, thank you

Customer:

i logged out and logged back in, but it still seems to be thinking

Mac Extraordinaire :

Ok, what does that mean?

Mac Extraordinaire :

Was the file uploaded?

Mac Extraordinaire :

Was it uploaded to the same location?

Customer:

i havent been able to upload it

Mac Extraordinaire :

Ok

Mac Extraordinaire :

That is what needs to be done now.

Mac Extraordinaire :

You need to upload that file before we can continue.

Customer:

i beleive the correct one is now uploaded

Customer:

I deleted the old one since I was having some trouble

Mac Extraordinaire :

Ok

Mac Extraordinaire :

What is the link to that swf file, please?

Mac Extraordinaire :

Never mind

Mac Extraordinaire :

I found it

Mac Extraordinaire :

SUCCESS!!!

Mac Extraordinaire :

it is working now

Mac Extraordinaire :

Insert the following line of code in your page:

<embed src="http://tealtea.com/Teal_Teal_Foundation/Teal%20Tea%20Stories%20Slide%20Show.swf">

Mac Extraordinaire :

And you will be good to go

Mac Extraordinaire :

You may wish to add other values, such as width and height

Mac Extraordinaire :

Example:

<embed src="http://tealtea.com/Teal_Teal_Foundation/Teal%20Tea%20Stories%20Slide%20Show.swf" width="640px" height="480px">

Customer:

I finally see the slideshow with your script. Wonderful! However It is very small, How do I get it larger

Mac Extraordinaire :

The actual video?

Mac Extraordinaire :

You can edit the width and height values.

Mac Extraordinaire :

*appropriately

Customer:

in order for it to appear bigger on the website, do I change the values in the code, or do I have to change that in the original file during the converting stage

Mac Extraordinaire :

Change it in the code

Mac Extraordinaire :

If you want it larger, just increase the values of width & height

Customer:

640 by 480 is a bit too big how do I decrease while keeping it in proportion

Mac Extraordinaire :

You change the width & height values.

Customer:

if I wish to remove the slider at the bottom I assume I would have to do that before or during converting? I wasn't sure what it was going to look like.

Mac Extraordinaire :

That is correct, you just do that when you create it.

Mac Extraordinaire :

But you have all of the tools and know how now.

Mac Extraordinaire :

You may click the Accept button now and leave any feedback for me that you feel is appropriate.

I will not be paid for my time until you click the Accept button.

Mac Extraordinaire :

Thank you for your time and patience.

Mac Extraordinaire :

How is that coming along? Are you recreating the SWF file?

Customer:

I was going to recreate it without the background. sorry the kids have distracted me

Mac Extraordinaire :

No worries

Mac Extraordinaire :

I must remain here until you are complete.

Mac Extraordinaire :

No rush

Customer:

i have the new file uploaded. how shall i apply it

Mac Extraordinaire :

Just insert the code into your page, linking to the new swf file.

Mac Extraordinaire :

That is all.

Customer:

what part of the code would be changed?

Customer:

I deleted the old swf file and put the new one in its place so wouldn't it be the same code?

Mac Extraordinaire :

That is correcrt

Mac Extraordinaire :

*correct

Mac Extraordinaire :

No code needs to be changed then

Mac Extraordinaire :

All you must refresh the page.\

Customer:

it seems to still be the older version.

Mac Extraordinaire :

Ok.

Mac Extraordinaire :

Mac Extraordinaire :
