Hello, my name is Dan.
I will do my best to help you, the only stupid question is the unasked one.
Did you try clicking on Choose Library? If so what did it tell you?
What version of iPhoto are you using?
Where is the default location for the Library?
What version of OS X do you have?

Customer: replied 5 years ago.
choose library = blank, no library to choose
Iphoto version = 8.1.2 (424)
mac os x = 10.6.5

Ok, try a rebuild.
Get this by holding both the Option and Command keys then opening iPhoto.
Let me know.

Okay, try doing a safe boot, this runs UNIX repair routines which may find your library. It is worth a try and will do no harm.

To do a Safe Boot, restart and before the first chime press and hold the 'Shift' key.
Wait until you see the Apple logo and the spinning gear appear, then let go.
It can take as long as 20 minutes to load, so please be patient.
When the login screen appears it will say in red on the login window 'SafeBoot'.
Now login and give it a few more minutes to finish loading.
Try doing whatever it was it was giving you the problem. If it works then probably the problem is solved, so restart normally.
If the problem persists then restart normally also, other fixes will need to be done.
Let me know that makes a difference.

Well we might as well go through all the maintenance procedures.
I suggest repairing the permissions.

what shall i do now. still cannot recover the old library

I suggest doing a search for jpeg files using Spotlight. You are looking for a folder named Originals, this will have all photos that were in your Library.
After that, if it fails, then I suggest Data Rescue. I do not think that your Library is gone but just hidden.
You might want to use Tinker Tool, TinkerTool for Mac, it will toggle hidden files on so you can see them.
It may make Find Library find it.
Let me know.
