I have an old iMac (G3 at 300 MHz with the first slot loading DVD player) running OS 9.2 and would like to transfer files from it to a new iMac (Intel i3 chip running OS X 10.6). Is it possible using Migration Assistant?

You can use Target Disk Mode to transfer the files from your iMac G3 to Intel iMac. You just need to buy a Firewire cable and connect the both Macs with it and startup in Target Disk Mode.
