Hi, I'm Mary and I'll do my best to help you solve your Mac issue.

There's a little program called InsomniaX which you can install that will prevent the sleep mode. I have a MacBook connected to an external monitor, but I don't use this utility because I found it sometimes affected the stability of my system.

What I do is, when the computer sleeps, I unplug and re-plug in a powered-on usb device (phone, printer, etc) an it wakes the computer up.

You can also click your mouse or press on the space bar of the computer to do the same thing. Removing and re-inserting the power cord also does the trick.
