Is there any kind of Iomega (or other brand) of external hard drive that will be compatible with my mother's old iMac running OS 9.2?
You should be able to plug in a Firewire or USB based hard drive. Just remember that iMac plays better with Firewire, and do not go over 500GB in hard drive size.

Will I need any additional software if the drive is Mac compatible?
You will not need any additional software, the drive should come up automatically.

Here is a drive that would be compatible: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822101095&cm_re=mac_os_9_hard_drive-_-22-101-095-_-Product
