My daughter's Mac won't boot up. It shows a file folder with a flashing question mark. What does this mean, and what can she do. I understand that it's OS10

Customer:

no chime. no response

Mike the MacMedic :

Did it restart at all? Hold in the power button until it shuts off then try again.

Customer:

what next?

Mike the MacMedic :

No chime at all?

Customer:

no

Mike the MacMedic :

I can’t emphasize enough that if your computer will start up you need to backup any important files to a CD/DVD, memory stick or external hard drive before trying this. Then start up from your original system disk. Put this disk in and restart holding down the C key until you see the Apple logo. When you get to the Install screen you will see at the top of the screen a Utilities menu drop down. Go the Disk Utility and select your hard rive on the left , try to Verify Disk, if not OK try to Repair Disk and also Repair Permissions.

Customer:

This sounds like a problem she should take to a professional, since the disk has (unfortunately) not been backed up properly. Do you know of good Mac repair shops near Fairfield, CT?

Customer:

The computer simply won't start up, so there is no way to back up the files.

Mike the MacMedic :

What is you area code?

Customer:

203

Mike the MacMedic :

Sorry I meant zip code.

Customer:

Her zip is 06824
