1- Please go to the apple icon on the upper left corner of your screen and click "System Preferences"

2- Click "Print & Fax"

3- Click your printer ONCE (on the left), then click the "Scan" tab on the right

4- Click "Open Scanner" and follow the prompts to scan

I am no further forward with the advice given. Still get the same reply " Scan failure unable to copy or print" Sorry.

What exact Mac OS X version do you have ? Go to apple icon, then About this Mac. You will see the version number under "Mac OS X"
