Every time I try to open any of the Microsoft 2004 Apps - Word,

Resolved Question:

Every time I try to open any of the Microsoft 2004 Apps - Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Updater, Entourage - they crash horribly before starting up. Reinstalling, trashing the com.plist files or microsoft directory in /Users/me/Library/Preferences does not help. Nor does restoring the LaunchCFMApp from TimeMachine. Nor any of the fontcachedb or duplicate font suggestions also found on the web. Crashes also when logged in as a brand new, freshly created temporary user. The crash report looks like this:

Greetings,

You are running Snow Leopard 10.6+, which does not by default have support for PPC-binaries. The crash report above indicates that Microsoft Office 2004 is a PowerPC native binary, not an Intel one, and therefore requires you to install the optional Rosetta system.

Insert the Snow Leopard 10.6 disc, and double click on the optional installs ("OptionalInstalls.mpkg"). Follow the instructions, and make sure you select Rosetta. It will most likely require a restart.

That should solve your problem.

In addition, make sure you download all the latest updates for Microsoft Office 2004 from the Microsoft for Mac website.

I forgot to mention that I did that too; all MS apps still crash. Ah, but I had not rebooted following the Rosetta re-install. Everything seems ok again, and you have saved me an upgrade to MS Office 2008, cool!
