What are the best versions of imovie and QT to use for a Mac

Customer Question

What are the best versions of imovie and QT to use for
a Mac G4 Cube, upgraded with a 1.2Gb processor, and
Mac 10.4.3?
I've been using imovie 3.03 for many years and very much
like that format, so I would like to upgrade without going
into the ilife formats, which I do not like in the least and find
very user-unfriendly.
I'm looking for increased speed and reliability in the rendering especially.
thank you very much for your help within these parameters.

Hi ,
I would like to assist your with this .

Please update Quicktime from Software update in the Apple menu , Software update. It will be the latest version for your OSX 10.4.

Once updated , Register for Pro activation if you require extra Quicktime Pro options .
Mainly exporting additions and some simple editing are included with the QT-Pro option . Find the option in Quicktime drop down menu and preferences .

imovie HD version 6.04 is a great choice and last of the versions before the makeover in version 7

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iMovie/6.0/en/imv1096.html

Later versions : iLife ’09 Mac OS X v10.5.6 or later .

According to Apple's system requirements iMovie '08 Version 7.0 , requires at least a PowerPC G5 1.9 GHz or an Intel Processor. G4's are not supported, though Apple sold its last G4-based Computers (iBook G4) 14 months before the release of iLife '08.
However, a system hack enables iMovie 7.1 or higher to run with a PowerPC G4.

imovie Version 7 is to be avoided .

iMovie '09 (Version 8.0) Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) requirement is on the other hand very good , and you can use both iMovie '09 (Version 8.0) and imovie HD 6 for there plus points .

So its imovie HD 6 , 6.0.3 or 6.0.4 are your best options , without hacking .

I hope this helps .

Thanks .
Customer: replied 4 years ago.
Are you positively sure that Imovie 6 will run with
Mac OS 10.4.3? That's the operating system I am using.
And can I get it as a stand-alone? I don't want to
buy ilife.
Expert:  iteachmac replied 4 years ago.

Hi , it sounds like you have the rage pro card in your cube . :(

just one last note , you can up your card to a GeForce 2MX, which was also used in PowerMacs of the same era. Make sure you get the Mac edition if you want to upgrade.

http://cgi.ebay.com/APPLE-MAC-G4-CUBE-32MB-nVidia-GeForce-2-GRAPHICS-CARD_W0QQitemZ300394573033QQcmdZViewItemQQptZPCC_Video_TV_Cards?hash=item45f0e96ce9

Build-to-order options were the GeForce 2MX and the Radeon AGP.

Also it maybe possible to get ilife to install by looking at the package content , and finding individual installers .

I will test this in the next day or so .

Thanks i hope this helps .
Customer: replied 4 years ago.
I don't understand what you mean. I tried to do a custom installation witihout the garage band or IDVD themes, since my interest is in the imovie 6.0.
what the system told me was that I couldn't install because something called
"Quartz" was missing from the software. I tried googling "quartz" and couldn't find any appropriate reference to it in the computer context.

I tried calling the guy from ebay who sold me this deficient package, but although I have his address in Columbia Mo, he has no listed phone number. I've sent an email via ebay but have received no answer. I can't afford to buy a new video card right now, and in any case why would that help with an installation of imovie? My cube meets the system requirements.

Hi ,

lets see what graphics card is in your G4 cube .

Quartz refers to a technology that's in the OS , some graphics cards dont support it
, it needs to be enabled for imovie HD or at least the installer.

Go to the Apple menu , about this mac , more info .

Click on graphics / displays in the list of computer parts .

Please reply with the information there .

-

Software Installations in order as below will give us a better chance of enabling Quartz extreme with the correct hardware.

Also here is a combo update for 10.4 - to 10.4.11 as you may need to update for Quicktime and components , its best to use the 10.4.11 as its the last version of Tiger , has many bug fixes and improvements.

Hi,

This is taken from the graphics/ display information under the system profiler. Is this the information that you wanted?

Also, I downloaded mac 10.4.11 and quicktime 764.

Ok that's good , keep up to date .

Try this link to quartzextreme check .
http://www2.entropy.ch/download/QuartzExtremeCheck-1.2.app.sit

The Rage pro was the lowest spec , and you see there is now support for Quartz Extreme.

There maybe some rare upgrade cards in cyberspace that are quartz compatible .
But we will have to check before hand .
See my links for ebay as posted.

Please try to install imovie from the package contents , do do this :-

1 insert the life dvd

2 Open the finder window of the ilife dvd .

3 Select the installer package .

4 CTR-click or right mouse click the install package to show the contextual menu .

5 Select show package contents .

6 A window should pop up , Open each folder in turn or explore the folders to find the imovie installer:- Contents / installers .

7 Find and run the installer for imovie.

8 Hopefully this will by pass the Quarts extreme check .

9 Test imovie HD

Please let me know if this helps .
Thanks .
