G5 powermac system 10.5.8 On shutdown computer goes to background picture and spinning black wheel but does not shutdown same for restart Help
Computer OS: Mac OS XBrowser: Other Already Tried: disk utility repair and permissions repair all ok
Hi there,This usually means the system is waiting for something to either complete or exit so it can continue. First suggestion would've been permissions but you have already done that. My next suggestion would be an Archive and Install of OS X. This reinstalls the system but doesn't touch your applications, data or settings. To do this, you will need an original Mac OS X disc (10.5 disc). Let me know if you have this so we can continue.Brandon
BrandonI have an upgrade to system 10.5 disc but to upgrade I have to restart the computer with the disc in the disc drive BUT the computer will not restart ..Any idea how to get around this problem certainly much appreciate your help hereThanks
What you can do is either hold the power button in for a few seconds until the computer turns off or pull the power plug. When it is off, hold down the mouse button (left button if you have a two-button mouse) and turn on the mac until the cd/dvd drive pops out. You can put the disc in and hold down the C key. If you are quick enough, it should boot from the disc. If not, let your mac boot normally and shut it back down, holding the button again. Let me know if this works for you.Brandon
Ok Brandon1. I can turn on the machine with the 10.5 upgrade disc in it and hold down c key but the computer will not bootup from the disc drive (this may be a feature of the upgrade disc??)2. I have a found a new problem it will also not start in safe boot mode. Having turned it off with the button on the front I turn it on with that button, wait for the tone, press the shift key until the screen comes up then release it the computer has the white screen with the apple whirs and makes noises for a while then the fans start blowing loud and then a higher pitch whirring sound even more fan noise - i then turn it offIdeas ???it still boots in normal mode ok
You should be able to boot from it regardless. Try turning your mac on with the Option key held down and the disc in the drive. A blue-ish screen should appear. Wait about a minute (or until the cursor changes from a watch). If you see the disc, choose it and click the right arrow. If not, it doesn't see the disc. You need to hold Shift the entire boot process (not just to the Apple) to continue in safe boot. You can also try verbose mode (Command-V on boot) which would be a bunch of gibberish to you.Brandon

Brandonthanks for the help so far regarding safe boot I also held down the shift key without letting it up and still it never booted even after 5 minutes or more instead fans got very noisy loud clicking noises and then the really fast high pitched whirring sound I let it go only after about 30 seconds or may be 60 of the high pitch whirring sound then I turned it off I will try holding the option key as you suggest when I get home today (this is home office computer critical for my work.... )Much appreciate your help Richard
