Does Display show you are in colors?

Go to the System Prefs again and this time go into Universal Access.

Is anything in there set to White on Black? if so, change it.

I think that may be what's wrong.

Hmmm.

Now that is odd. If it was set that way, it should have changed the display immediately.

Did you restart? After restart, check the setting again and change it again if need be.
