It sounds like a hardware problem but let's try booting from a CD

How do you boot from a CD? Are you referring to a CD that is part of the setup?

insert the setup CD.   Shut the computer off. Press and hold the power key or remove the battery to shut it off.
power up and press and hold the C key to start up from the CD.
