What has been the recent history of the machine, software profile and hardware changes?
Expert:  Tech Support - Client and Server replied 5 years ago.
Oh. By the way ... is the partitioning of the drive your own set up? I ask because most entry level users don't have there drive partitioned ....

And I do notice that your ethernet is showing 100MB as opposed to full speed 1000MB (GigabitEthernet)....

I mostly waiting on your software profile.... Is it 10.4.11 or 10.5.5?

You could like copy in your Software Update log if you like
Customer: replied 5 years ago.
HI,
ok, I set up the partitions when I first purchased the G5. I have been using Apple since 1981 when I first purchased the Apple II and have just kept buying Apple since. Never have used a PC. That is why this problem is bothering me because I should know what is going on here or how to fix it. With the old conflict catcher program, I could run it and see if there was a conflict with my extensions or programs but not with the G5.
I am using system OSX 10.4.11

How do I speed up my ethernet? I am using comcast for my internet connectyion, should I upgrade my ethernet cable to a higher one?

here is the software update log

Hi Douglas,
<br />
<br />There is a lot of history in your software onboard right now.....
<br />
<br />
<br />I know you may not want to hear this but...... THis is what is would take to really start to work on the system instability....
<br />
<br />I have found in my experience that I really WANT to use Unsanity Software but....... have had problems that point to Applications Enhancer ( The system extension in your System Preferences )
<br />Even if you choice to add it back in later..... Please Uninstall in ( not temporarily as the button will give you that option. ) This will disable WIndowShade and other.s...
<br />
<br />Next I would remove all things Norton and all Virus software in general..
<br />
<br />Are you using any Mac OS 9 application at this point?

Next iStat Menus.... I like a lot..... what does the fan speed look like on your fans?
Customer: replied 5 years ago.
ok, took out Application Enhancer. why should I remove Norton and all Virus software in general.. ? If I do, what software should I use for protection?
Are you using any Mac OS 9 application at this point? No, I don't have any System 9 programs

Next iStat Menus.... I like a lot..... what does the fan speed look like on your fans?
CPU A Exhaust Fan is 300 RPM
CPU A INtake Fan is 320 RPM
CPU B Exhaust Fan is 318 RPM
CPU B Intake Fan is 300 RPM
PCI Slot Fan is 23.0%
how do I increase my ethernet from 100MB as opposed to full speed 1000MB?
Douglas
Expert:  Tech Support - Client and Server replied 5 years ago.
While ethernet speed was not the original question,
<br /><br /><br />
<br /><br /><br />goto Preference>Network>Built-In Ethernet>Ethernet and check that it says "Automatic" If it does, then I'm thinking that your hub, switch, router is 10/100 not gigabit....
<br /><br /><br />
<br /><br /><br />Back to the quesition.
<br /><br /><br />
<br /><br /><br />My approach to your problem is to clear away thing that I removed long ago and in my opinion just add needless CPU cycle .... There still is not a serious threat from any Virus on the Mac.... and I have had Norton cause problems.
<br /><br /><br />
<br /><br /><br />However, you could check things by restarting your machine in "Safe Boot" mode. This will disable most add-ons.
<br /><br /><br />
<br /><br /><br />See if the behavior changes significantly.....
<br /><br /><br />
<br /><br /><br />You know the answer to your question is going to probably take several rounds.....
<br /><br /><br />
<br /><br /><br />and you know this already..... or you would be asking..... clearly, you are an experience Mac user....
<br /><br />
<br /><br />I also recommend that you download iStat Pro and turn on the disk monitor settings.
<br /><br />
<br /><br />I'm wondering about your Harddisk.....
<br /><br />
<br /><br />When was the last time you swapped Hard Disks?
<br />
<br />Also, if you have the side open, that is a problem.... The airflow with the box closed will protect all component with air flow, with the box open, all bets are off..... I'd be worried about the survival of various hardware with long term open box situation.....
<br />
<br />For comparison....
<br />
<br />Both of my G5_Duals run 24 hours a day and have temperatures on the Heatsink of 121 for my Leopard Server with low load and 148 for my Tiger Server with minimal load but that is with a cool room temperature of 70 degree..... The Heatsink temperature does get much hotter, I believe 150-160 is not uncommon or problematic at all....
<br />
<br />

I would remove Adobe Reader all versions..... Safari does fine without it for more people.
<br />
<br />
<br />You do have a lot of plugs other than Adobe Reader....
<br />
<br />Try doing as you previous suggested with OS9 ( i.e. Conflict Catcher ) and remove all of the Internet Related Plugs-Ins to a folder you create called Plug-Ins (Disabled). As a note Safari is getting very slow in this version series...... With Snow Leopard.... I think it will speed back up again...

I highly recommend you speed the $100 at Other World Computing, TranIntl, Crucial and fill up your RAM to the Maximum Possible 4GB I think....
Expert:  Tech Support - Client and Server replied 5 years ago.
Adobe Reader 8.1.0 is stable for me on one machine.....

I double checked for G5 and is looks like you have the Power Mac G5 ( June 2004) "Q78"
and you probably can go up to 8GB of memory...

Double check with the Crucial downloadable memory tool which will also take you to their order page .... double check price with OWC.

That's my recommendation....

How are you getting the software titles and versions? What are you using.... I was look for an easy way to send you my plug-in list and versions but do see it right away....

Customer: replied 5 years ago.
I have Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional not Adobe Reader. I have deleted the preference files for Safari and turn off the Warning for Fraud sites and so far it has not locked up.
I will upgrade my memory, it says that I can easy add 4 to 6 GB by replacing the two 256 I
have now or I could go up to 8 if I also replace the two 256 and the two 512 I have now.
I got the software titles and versions from About This Mac, just copied it and pasted it to you. I did the same for my plugin list. Went to Installed Plugins under Help and selected all and then just copied it and sent it to you. You could probably do the same so I will know about plugins I might need.
If I delete the Adobe plugin will I still be able to open pdf in a web page. Iknow htat is another question but I do need to open pdf files on the web and not download all of them.

You will still have PDFs without Adobe Reader as a plugin..... Safari reads PDF without a plugin....
<br />
<br />It you like reading PDFs the Adobe way, upgrade the Adobe Reader to a newer version.
<br />
<br />Here is my list from a stable 10.4.11 machine

<br />     flashplayer.xpt
<br />     Flip4Mac WMV Plugin.plugin   2.2.1

<br />     Java Applet Plugin Enabler 1.3.1
<br />     Java Applet.plugin

<br />     NP-PPC-Dir-Shockwave
<br />     nsIQTScriptablePlugin.xpt

<br />     RealPlayer Plugin.plugin
<br />     VerifiedDownloadPlugin.plugin

You will really benefit from RAM and when you go to Leopard.... you will need it.... and be happier... Your G5 will serve you well for a few more years with a full stack of RAM and a fast hard drive ( or two ). Current best value Seagate 7200.11 Series 500GB are about $75.

Don't worry too much about the temperature if your box is closed up and the fan to working.

When my G5 of same vintage is "hot" - Air Temperature near 90 - The fans are turning but the temperature is pretty steady around 160

Talk to you later....

  • Hi John, Thank you for your expertise and, more important, for your kindness because they make me, almost, look forward to my next computer problem. After the next problem comes, I'll be delighted to correspond again with you. I'm told that I excel at programing. But system administration has never been one of my talents. So it's great to have an expert to rely on when the computer decides to stump me. God bless, Bill Bill M. Schenectady, New York
