Click the Apple Menu>System Preferences...

Click Sharing in the third row from the top

Your file sharing preferences will open, If you want to cut off all outside communication with your computer, make sure all the services in the left-hand column are unchecked.

After this is done, people will not be able to see your computer, but you will still be able to see theirs if they haven't shut off access this way also.

It should just be computers on your network, are you sharing a network with computers out of your control?
