1) Have you tried starting up in 'Single User Mode' and running fsck?

To do so, restart and hold down on the Command and S keys simultaneously until a dark screen with lettering appears. Once it stops writing and leaves you a prompt, do the first of what it says in a previous line : type '/sbin/fsck -y' and do this repeatedly until you get two consecutive clean reports. Then type the second of what it says in that earlier line to save any changes made.

2) Have you started up from the OS X CD and repaired permissions?

I would try those two things and cross my fingers. If you are going to start up from the CD anyway, you can repair the disk with the Disk Utility on that CD instead of starting up in single user mode.

I hope this works.
