"March of Freedom" by Edith Singer is a book that tells about the life of a 16-year old Holocaust survivor. Edith Singer was a Jewish prisoner during World War 2 that was sent to the Auschwitz Nazi Camp. The story talks about the author's day-by-day experiences of being forced to live in horrific conditions. Once entering the camp, which reads outside of it's gate "Work Makes You Free", Edith finds that the message of this sign to be anything but true. She mentions on page 42 in the book: "“But after several days in Auschwitz, I realized that this was not a bad dream but a terrible and cruel reality”". Edith was worked to the bone and starved for food since they were only fed twice a day. According to Edith, they were even forced to sleep on wooden bunk beds that would break throughout the night. Even though Edith witnessed the torture of other prisoners, she managed to keep her faith and strength throughout the experience. Edith stayed true by holding onto her religion through prayer and not giving up hope. She not only fought to survive but worked to keep others alive. She mentioned how she would risk her own life to give her fellow Jewish prisoners blankets and help them out. Though Edith went through many hardships during her stay at the Auschwitz Nazi Camp, she prospered through these hard times. Many people did not survive the experience but Edith's determination, positive outlook, and luck kept her alive and gave her the opportunity of being reunited with her mother and sister again.
