The vehicle "can" be driven without an alternator belt. It may not stay running very long however. The on-board computer and other systems need a constant supply of voltage. When the alternator belt is off, the alternator is not re-charging the battery, so all systems are running directly off the battery. This will quickly drain the battery below normal voltage levels and the engine will then shut down. So, yes, you can drive it without doing damage, just how far you will get is the question.
