Customer Question

I have a 2007 LS with 91k miles. I'm at the dealer getting an oil change and service guy is giving me a hard time about not using synthetic. I've almost always used conventional, not synthetic oil. Are there really any issues doing this? I think a $120 oil change every 5k miles is a bit much.

Conventional oil is not junk, and has to meet certain quality standards. It is no doubt that full synthetic is superior to conventional engine oil, but most people do not use synthetic oil and many still get 250k out of their car. We had a customer with a lexus rx300 with almost 315000 and she always had us use conventional. We usually don't get asked to use full synthetic. Newer GM cars are requiring full synthetic for the warranty, but you don't fit that category. If they are charging 120.00 for a synthetic oil change, then I understand why they want you to get one! Like I said.... synthetic is superior, but for a normal driver under normal conditions, you are doing fine with conventional.
