In North Carolina an affray occurs when two people are involved in a public fight which would be likely to frighten others. A barroom brawl, for example, would be a good example of an affray. An assault, on the other hand is just a show of some kind of force indicating that a battery is likely to follow. If I raise my hand to strike you, that would be a simple assault in your state.
