Forgery is a Class D felony, which means the penalty is up to 7 years of imprisonment. Missouri Stat., Sections(###) ###-####/a> and 558.0011. The judge has discretion to punish it as a felony, though. Prosecutors could instead choose to charge the person with theft, which is a Class C felony if the bond was worth more than $500. Section(###) ###-####/a>. A Class C felony is punishable by 3 to 10 years. These penalties are based on changes to the statute effective January 1. If the case is resolved before then, the maximum penalty is 4 years for Class D felony and 7 years for a Class C. The court can also impose fines for either violation.
The actual sentence will depend on the facts of the case, whether the accused person is willing to plead guilty, and whether they have any criminal history.
