Customer Question

I am writing a novel and want to write a scene about my main character meeting a famous movie star. Can I use a real star, say, Tom Cruise? Are there any legal problems? I would use a disclaimer stating that all events in the book are fictional. Thank you.

Hi - my name is ***** ***** I'll be glad to assist. This could be an issue because celebrities have intellectual property rights attached to their celebrity status.

if there are portions of the book that name a celebrity and it appears that the celebrity either endorsed or gave permission to be included in the book, it could be a problem and the celebrity may issue a demand letter or even sue over it.
