Hello and thank you for your question. For over 35 years I have answered questions just like yours. And I look forward to assisting you.
YES you need representation but this site is limited to answering questions and providing representation. Likewise, if you do nothing, the plaintiff will have the court issue a default judgment against you. Accordingly a good referral site is findlaw.com where you can search by geographical location (where your mom resides) and the specialty of law which is consumer/civil litigation defense. But note that attorneys who handle these matters take cases on an hourly basis. So be prepared to pay a retainer fee. Regardless of the civil matter, what this caregiver did was criminal. But unless you contact your local police department (where your Mom lives) and file a criminal complaint for embezzlement, she will get a way with it. Note, even though you stopped the check does not negate the fact that she still committed a crime and should be prosecuted.
I wish you well. Please rate my answer ok or better. Otherwise I am not paid for assisting you even though you paid a deposit.
