What are the approximate costs to obtain a contractors license? My uncle and grandfather each have their own, and my brother would like to acquire one for himself. Im aware that someone with a contractors license must sign a doc saying that the person applying has worked construction for...what is it 2+ years? Anyhow, my brother has been involved over 10. So we're wondering...about how much would it cost for him to get his own license? We heard it might be around 4K?

A person with "journeyman" level experience in a particular construction trade can apply for a license and then take the license test. The fees for the application and test are $400. Assuming that your brother passes the exam, and has licensed contractors willing to certify your brother's experience in a specific trade, then he must also file a surety bond or cash in the amount of $10,000 with the Contractors State License Board (CSLB). Most contractors do not pay cash, they purchase a surety. A bond will cost between $100 and $625, depending upon the license classification. For a list of sureties, "google" "California construction bond". Hope this helps. NOTICE: My goal here is to entertain while educating the public about the law.
