I want to obtain legal advise on calendar raffles for nonprofit organizations in each state. What area of law is this? How would I go about getting help on a state by state basis? I run a charitable calendar raffle for my church in MA and I want to see if I can run one the same way at other churches in the other states. The regulations are very confusing and inconsistent across the states.
Optional Information: Country relating to Question: United States State (if USA): Massachusetts Already Tried: looking at the regulations myself and contacting some of the states by mail and phone
This comes under the gambling laws of each state and they are somewhat inconsistent across the states. To make matters worse there is no one document available that summarizes all of these laws for non-profits so you can find it all in one place, it requires that you have someone research the laws of every state to make the determination. I am afraid that because of the cost and the time to look at each state's laws, that is well beyond the scope of this service and I apologize that you would need to either contact the Attorney General's office in each state or you would have to specifically look at all 50 state's gambling laws to determine if your raffle fits in those laws. Some states, such as MN will require you to register and get a permit with the state.
