My brother is in jail and we need to get his Social Security processed so he can get out. He was deemed incompetent to stand trial and can be released only to a psychiatric facility. We have the paper work that deems him 100% disabled by an evaluator. My sister-in-law has been trying to process his emergency medical insurance so the facility can pick him up. We are hitting road blocks everywhere because he's in jail and can't file the paper work. What do we do?
You can get a Power of Attorney from him that will allow you to file the paperwork but he won't be approved until he is out of jail. What will the POA do? We can't get him out without it being approved so the hospital can pick him up.

And if he doesn't do POAs how do we get them to my brother in jail to be signed?
You can take one to the jail and they should get it to your brother to be signed. We live in a different county than my brother is incarcerated in. Can my mom get the POA and file all the paper work for SSI here in our county or does it have to all be done in the county he's incarcerated in?
