Under New York law, can I file a law suit against a person for falsely accusing me of child abuse which in turn caused special harm or defamation per se?

Under NY Penal Code 240.50, it is considered False Reporting in the Third Degree to make a false report of child abuse and it is subject to arrest and punishable as a class A Misdemeanor up to 1 year in jail. Additionally, you can file a civil suit against the party and seek damages for Harassment and Defamation for filing the false report.

What are the costs for filing a civil law suit in Suffolk County, NY for defamation per se? Can I represent myself?
Here are the various filing fees for Suffolk County. It is roughly $90 for a civil suit or $20 for a Small Claims action. You can represent yourself if you have experience in court and are familiar enough with the rules of procedure and evidence and are familiar with the forms you need to file from the form books which you can find at the court library by asking the librarian.
