Is there a time limitation in New Jersey that one can not ask for alimony from the spouce. My wife was told that if she waits for a specified period after seperation she would not have to pay alimony.

That is incorrect. There is no set time limit on filing a petition for alimony. However, the longer one waits, the more of a factor that becomes in the court's determination. Look at it this way: If I file for divorce and ask for alimony from my wife right away because I have much less earnings than her, the court will make the determination based on the the difference in our respective earnings. However, if I wait 5 years after the date of separation to ask for alimony, the court will award me much less or no alimony at all, since my lifestyle over the last 5 years has been on my earnings alone, and therefore, there is no need to adjust that.
