Unlawful use of Fireworks law section 16-20 in Newport news va. What am I looking at? Just a fine, or is it a misdemeanor?
Optional Information: Country relating to Question: United States State (if USA): Virginia Already Tried: None
In VA it is a class 1 Misdemeanor and is punishable by up to 12 months in jail and a fine of $2500. Generally, no jail is given for a first offense, it is generally a fine of up to $200 on a first offense. Also, on a first offense the commonwealth attorney is likely to offer you a deal of a deferred sentence and if you have no further charges in 12 months they will dismiss the charges as long as you paid the fine.

Would it be a good idea to get a lawyer? Court date in in 3 weeks. It is my first offense. I can't have a misdemeanor on my record because of job. Will get fired if so.
Yes, if you cannot afford a misdemeanor, you need to get an attorney to negotiate a deal for you.
