I co -signed for a loan approx 5 years ago through the us Dept of Education for my brother, who I no longer speak to. I opened his last statement and there are three different loans listed A, B and C. Listed are direct subsidized, direct unsub and Direct Grad. I am very, very upset because initially I thought I was liable for only C, with a balance of approx $2,000. How can I find out ( tonight, as I am having a melt-down!) if I am liable for also A and B? The total is approx $80,000. So far, only c is listed on my credit report, I think, but I will double check. Could I be held responsible for all three, since they appear to all be linked? Please help!! If so, my finbancial future is over. I have worked thirty years to proveide and protect my credit but there is no way I can pay off his 80,000 in debt.
Honestly, the only way to check is you have to call the Department of Education to ask for information on the loans as a co-signer, since they will not allow you to access the website. The website is for the borrower only and not the co-signer and the DoE is not open until tomorrow morning. I am afraid that the information you seek is not online, BUT they do report all of the loans you are a co-signer on to the credit bureaus and if there is only one loan being reported you can generally rest assured that is the only one that you are co-signer for.
