I asked a question but forgot to log in before asking ... so, here it is again. Can health care providers increase your premium amount? I just got a notice that they will notify me of a new premium, as they are filing for a rate adjustment with {a. Insurance Dept. How/why are they allowed to do this? When you apply to be a client/member it is based upon a premium they quote you. Please explain this to me, AND does an individual have any recourse in fighting this rate adjustment? (I've had no claims - if that matters.)thank you.

Yes, a healthcare insurer can change premiums with approval of the Insurance Department. You can file a written objection to the approval of the rate increase to the Insurance Commissioner's Office and express your reasons why a premium increase should be disallowed. The insurer cannot raise your rates until your current contract expires and when the renewal occurs the rates can increase.
