Are states required to inform other state of divorces in one

Customer Question

Are states required to inform other state of divorces in one state when the couple was married in another?

No. There is no central database or notification of divorces. It is not like criminal records that are shared. When a person marries in a new state as part of the licensing process they are required to disclose whether they are married.

The only way to find out if a divorce occurred is to check the records in the state where the divorce purportedly occurred. That would have to be a state of residence for one of the parties.

The problem is I can't find out where in Lousiana I can get a divorce certificate or information! That is where he lived.

Here is the state vital records office.

However probably the best way is to contact the clerk of court in the parish where he resided and see if there was a divorce action.
