My former landlord it trying to make me pay 1800.00 in damages allegedly done while I was renting the house. It's been more than two months since I moved out. The landlord and I did a complete walk through of the house and signed off on it after taking most of my deposit for damages incurred. However, now the landlord is claiming that she needs to replace the entire padding under the carpet through the whole house plus wants 500.00 additional dollars for more steam cleaning to the carpet even after I paid to have it cleaned, and she's allegedly had it cleaned two more times. She is not pro-rating the cost of the carpeting and padding. Do I have to pay her.
State/Country relating to Question: California Already Tried: nothing
Hi malathyon,The signing off after the walk-through marks the end of the landlord's opportunity to claim part of the deposit for any damage to the house. A landlord cannot on his own, and without permission of the tenant, add additional charges to what was agreed upon.Unless the signing-off agreement specifically states that the landlord can charge extra if it is determined that the carpet has to be cleaned more than once, you do not have to pay for the additional cleaning, especially since it has been 2 months since you moved out.
