I did something very stupid and improper. Im married with all the children gone. Im not having a great relationship with my wife right now. I buy musical instruments, and sometimes use craigslist. 3 weeks ago I went on casual incounters and tried to meet other men for a date. However unknowingly answered an ad more than once and never could do anything because im very scared of stds and all that comes with it, so i did nothing. however the person said that they were going to report me to the police for not going on a date. I changed my email address so he could not contact me anymore. Did I do something illegal.

Based on the information you have provided, it doesn't sound as if you broke any laws. It is perfectly legal to look for dates online. In fact, it is even legal to look for paid companionship online. What is not legal is soliciting paid sex acts by another person. So, if, in responding to a craigslist add, you explicitly stated that you were looking to pay someone for sex, you arguably committed a crime. However, unless you were actually asking to pay someone for sex (or for a sex act), you didn't do anything wrong. Millions of people every day look for discreet dates on line. It is up to you to decide for yourself if this is ethically ok, but it is certainly not illegal just to try and meet another man for a date.
