I was involved in a traffic accident while riding a <50cc motor scooter in California that is not currently insured. I do have a current insurance policy on a light truck, and am wondering if that insurance policy can be used to avoid the 30 day license suspension, even if the insurance is not specifically for the vehicle I was driving. I am the owner of the scooter in question as well and have a motorcycle endorsed license. I explained to the officer that the scooter was only very rarely used on the street, and the officer on the scene cited me for out of date registration and lack of proof of insurance, and noted that he was "cutting me a break", and that both infractions would be waved once I showed proof of both at the DMV. However, he did instruct me to file an SR-1 form (accident report) which states penalty for lack of insurance is a 30 day suspension. There was another vehicle involved and it did sustain damage, but its not clear whether it was above or below $750.
State/Country relating to Question: California

If you don't have in insurance policy with the scooter's VIN Number or Serial Number listed as an insured vehicle, you're going to face the penalty for not having it insured.
